Essays on life, truth, the Bible and God

Real intelligence

Dear sir,
This week the news service informed us that scientists had created synthetic life, which, on the face of it, sounds very impressive, but the details were hardly supportive of the claim.
Scientists in the Craig Venter Institute, California, managed to very cleverly insert an artificial chromosome into a bacterial cell, which then proceeded to replicate. I do not for a moment consider this achievement as minor, but a careful analysis of what actually happened reveals that despite the claims, life was not created.
What the scientists did was interpret information already pre-existing in a bacterial chromosome, then use already existing yeast cells to take advantage of already designed cellular machinery. They used these pre-existing cells and the already encoded information in the DNA, and the built in design in these atom-sized machines did the rest.
So the information in the cells they began with was already there, and the process used relied on chemical and molecular processes already programmed into the materials. Hardly what I would call the creation of life.
To use the word “create” correctly, the scientists would need to begin with nothing, that is, absolutely nothing. They would then need to make atoms and molecules out of nothing, stringing them together the right way to produce matter with intelligent design built into it, and construct matter in a multi-dimensional way conducive to many different uses. From these materials they would then have to build a cell complex enough to qualify as living, that is, able to replicate, utilize energy to move and grow, and respond to its environment.
If Venter’s team ever does make a complete cell, even from pre-existing materials, it will demonstrate that when God did it by His spoken word of power, He used intelligence, not evolution, to design and construct the world we live in.

Yours sincerely,
Richard Gunther

Politically correct but spiritually blind

An American judge has been ordered to remove a copy of the Ten Commandments from the wall of his court room. American schools are not allowed to have morning prayers addressed to the ‘Christian’ God. A New Zealand drama group has been advised to omit references to angels when performing ‘The Happy Prince’ in children’s hospitals. The Australian government has been asked to remove prayers from pre-match events. The list goes on and on.

The main reason why all this pressure has come against anything Christian or Biblical in the Western world is because there are people who hold different beliefs, and, say these advocates of religious freedom, it is not fair on people who believe differently to have to hear or be included in prayers in which they do not believe. And from one point of view they are right.

But the whole argument is based on the assumption that no-one is right.

The Christian assumes that the Bible is the Word of God, and that there really is only One True God, and that angels are also real . . . these assumptions are the basis of the Christian’s confidence, and so, naturally, the Christian feels free to pray to the Biblical God and display Biblical texts. But there are other people who have no such assumptions. There are atheists, who assume that there is no God at all, and agnostics who say there is no proof one way or the other that God is there, and there are the evolutionists who assume that the universe is entirely material and the product of random events, and there are many religions, which all hold different views about the nature of God, which Book is the true one, and whether angels are real.

The atheist assumes that all religions are wrong. All the religions assume that the atheist is wrong. The Christian assumes that all atheists and all religions are wrong – although the Christian would concede that all religions do have some things in common with Christianity. One has only to look up headings such as Islam, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Hinduism to notice the areas in which all the religions overlap.

But the new rules being brought in appear to be based on consideration of other people’s beliefs, and of course they are, but underlying this is the assumption that all beliefs are valid, and therefore no belief should have a monopoly over any of the others.

One cannot help agreeing with the logic of this, provided one assumes that the basis (the original assumption) of the new laws is correct. For example, Bible-in-schools teachers enjoy tremendous freedom, taking Bible teaching into schools, but who is to say that the Bible is God’s Word? And what right have these Christians to think that they and they alone should be allowed into schools? Surely, by the same ‘right’ any religion should also be allowed in?

And having opened the door to all religions, should we not also allow any cult through the door too – such as Mormons, or Jehovah’s Witnesses, Christian Scientists, Worldwide Church of God, or extreme cults, such as the Moonies?

The American law prohibits religious education (in state schools) within the doctrines of a particular church, because many years ago it was decided that the Church should be separated from the State. Something similar rules the policies in the Western world, with the result that there is great freedom from pressure on children to believe any particular doctrines.

In some ways this is a wonderful blessing, because it means that when Christian parents send their little Christian children off to school, they know that the teacher is not going to try and indoctrinate those children into any anti-Christian faith. Unfortunately, the practise of educating children without including the teachings of the Bible is directly opposed by the Bible, which commands parents to bring their children up in or with the Biblical teachings. (Prov.22:6, Deut.6:6-9, Prov.29:21, 2Tim.3:15)

Instead of teaching children Bible doctrines, secular, State-run schools educate children in evolutionary principles, pagan mythology and fantasy. Although there is much that is good about secular education, unless children are raised, trained and nurtured in the ways of God, they “gain the whole world, but lose their own souls”.

There is a commonly held assumption by most people – ‘No-one has all the truth’. Other forms or expressions of this assumption come out like :

“All religions are basically the same”

“It doesn’t matter what you believe – we’ll all get to heaven one day”

“Christianity came out of older religions so it’s not the best one”

“Its the same God, but He has many different names”

“All religions worship the same God”

“Jesus was just one of God’s prophets”

. . . and it must be admitted, what a wonderful thing it would be if all these assumptions were correct! How marvellous it would be if all the religions in the world could unite under a common banner. It would end all the conflicts, wars and divisions. And even better, if we might also include all the cults, then we would have such happiness and harmony. As John Lennon said “Imagine all the people, sharing all the world . . .”

If the Protestants and the Catholics could forget about their differences, there would be peace in Ireland. If the Popes hadn’t decided they were each the head of the one true Church, there would have been no Dark Ages, no persecutions, no 40-50 million people killed, and no Crusades.

So much comes from an assumption.

The assumption of evolution.

One of the most widely held assumptions in the Western world is the evolutionary one. This is not the place to write an extended article on the subject, so we will be brief.

The assumption goes like this : Random events caused chemicals to combine in such a way as to produce living cells, which gradually became more and more complex until whole organisms were produced. Thanks to natural selection (survival of the fittest) and mutations, all the living forms of life on planet earth today came about. Evolution also produced intelligence, creativity, love, compassion and other virtues, the conscience in Man at least, and self-awareness.

Like a cog in a vast machine, Man is therefore but an infinitesimal part of a whole universe. He is here because of random events. He has no ‘higher’ purpose because ‘God’ is just a figment of his own imagination. There is in fact no God, and there is nothing but total dissolution for Man when he dies. No past, no meaning in the present, and no future.

In my experience, no evolutionist is ever totally consistent with their assumption. Evolutionists are optimistic, hopeful, even happy. They love, enjoy life and have great pleasure in eating, playing and socialising. They can be creative, helpful, caring. They marry and show responsibility towards their wives and children. In other words, they live in direct contradiction to their own assumptions. They actually betray something else, something which shines out of them like light through tissue paper – they display the very thing which Christians has been saying all along : Man was made by God, and therefore Man has Godlike attributes.

So the evolutionary theory is contradicted by the very people who believe it, as well as by those who oppose it. In other terms, this is a bit like a ‘Flat-earther’ going round the world in a rocket trying to direct people’s gaze at the stars rather than the spherical planet in the window behind him. Or the man who thinks he can breath under water having to come up for air whenever he wants to make his claim that he can breath under water.

But evolutionary assumptions are not defeated only by the very proponents of the theory. Good science has also built up a solid army of facts which demolish the theory on all fronts, but these ‘soldiers of truth’ are not generally broadcast by the media, mainly because the media is still biased towards evolution. It may trumpet the findings of a new ‘missing link’ but it will not trumpet the comments by scientists who show that the bones are but the toes of a monkey. It may shout the news that recent carbon 14 dating has given a rock an age of 40 million years, but not a word is said about the built-in adjustments which scientists make in order to get the date they want.

President Clinton, an evolutionist, and most of his colleagues, made a grand show over some rocks found in Antarctica. NASA suggested that traces of fossilised bacteria may have been found in the rocks – perhaps from Mars – and the media was quick to publish the assumption that ‘proof of life on Mars’ had been found. But where was the media when, after careful examination of the rocks, NASA and others totally backed down, saying that the ‘fossils’ were simply mineral deposits?

One piece of good science, by way of example : If erosion continues at its present rate, all the above-sea land masses of the world would take approximately 10 million years to be completely eroded into the sea. There is also evidence to show that erosion has occurred at a much faster rate in the past. One counter-argument is that land is continually being pushed up, but the fact is, 80% of the land surface of the planet issedimentary rock, containing fossils. This kind of rock, because it contains fossils, must have been formed rapidly, in order to drown and bury the billions of living plants and creatures before they decomposed, which means that at some time in the recent past the world must have been totally inundated. This verifies the great Flood of Genesis.

But let us forget about Genesis for a moment and think about the erosion. If our above-sea land has only 10 million years, where is the time the evolutionists need for life to evolve? How can we fit all those hundreds of millions of years in?

Also erosion always produces alluvial fans, which spread out at river mouths, and extend under the sea for quite a distance. If the earth was as old as evolutionists say, there should be many vast alluvial fans. But there are only small ones, which, based on the present rates of erosion, give us a date for their formation as only a few thousand years.

Erosion of the land also produces an ever-increasing saltiness in the oceans. The rate at which the saltiness (salinity) is rising can be measured. Projecting backwards, and therefore reducing the salinity, we come to a date only a few thousand years ago when the oceans were barely salty – so how did all those animals evolve which are adapted to salt water? They should all be dead shouldn’t they?

Despite the many counter-arguments, evolution is taught in schools, from Primary, through Secondary, and on into Highschool. There are even University courses based on the theory, and many professionals actually make a living applying the theory to their work. It is obvious therefore that once people make an assumption, they cling to it despite the fact that every support is removed.

The idea that ‘natural selection’ drives evolution is totally defeated by genetics. Put simply, genetics shows that every organism passes on only the information it receives and no more. Sometimes information is lost – resulting in deformities or weaknesses. Sometimes information is scrambled – resulting in mutations. But the received information is never increased. This means that dogs will always produce nothing but dogs, and cats will produce nothing but cats. Mutations, the ‘straw’ grasped at by evolutionists, have no beneficial effect – usually they are lethal or sterile.

What some people claim as evolution, is merely variety within a species. Think of all the different varieties of cat – yet all cats, and all inter-fertile. The science of genetics has totally defeated Darwin’s theories, yet the media, mostly staunch believers, still labours under the assumption that Darwin was right, so the general public is never informed.

The assumption of religion.

Why do people believe things? This pushes us back to an evaluation of what exactly makes a human a human - something which turns out to be very complex in explanation.

One thing we know : we do not come into this world like blank sheets of paper, ready to be written on, nor do we arrive like empty sponges. We already have a tremendous amount of information already built into our brains – for example, it has been shown by good science that we have an area of our brain which is already ‘pre-wired’ for language. This is demonstrated by the way we organise our words automatically into what is called grammar (sentence structure, parts of speech) – the correct placing of the nouns with the verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns and so on. No-one has to teach us precisely how to do this, although we do learn a great deal from others as we grow more proficient at using language.

There are three main influences on a human : 1. Nature (What we already are), 2. Environment (The influence of the world). 3. Nurture (What other people put into us).

1. Nature - what we already are.

Every child in a large family is different. Their disposition is never ‘cut and dried’, but most of us can be categorised as either more extrovert or more introvert. Our personality can be summarised as one of four or five main types, with several subtypes. Our intelligence can also be measured to a certain extent, and many other aspects can be noted statistically. The end result is a summary of what we are, and from this many things can be deduced, such as how we might react under certain circumstances, what sort of work we are suited for, the sort of friends we might make, the kind of man/woman we might marry, and what kind of lifestyle we might be happiest with.

2. Environment - the influence of the world.

Some children are born into a mansions, with everything they need to be healthy and well educated, while others are born into hovels, with never enough food or clothes or warmth. Some children are loved and raised in happiness, while others are dragged up by imbecilic parents who cannot tell the difference between a book and a log of wood. For some children education is a glorious time, while for others it is a hauntingly dark and weary ration. Affluence or deprivation, wealth or poverty, and all the shades in between.

There are people who claim that they are what they are because of their environment, but this is never completely true. People can rise above their environment, and even use adversity to their advantage. Some of the greatest creative work has come from people who grew up through some of the most trying childhoods, so it is not logical to assume that environment controls us – it simply comes at us like the weather, and what we do with it makes all the difference.

3. Nurture - what other people put into us. This, I feel, could be the most important factor of the three. A child naturally, even instinctively, respects adults and learns from them values, attitudes and doctrines. Religion grows by the family, as well as by the convert. Prov.22:9 “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he shall not depart from it”. All the religions, and denominations and cults practise nurturing, and the result is a new generation of children thoroughly indoctrinated in the beliefs and assumptions of the parents – who in turn repeat the process. Of course, within this system there are plenty of converts, backsliders, proselytes and heretics, but the principle still holds, and in fact the ‘exception proves the rule’.

Now let us make a hypothetical argument. Suppose, just for the moment, that the Hindu religion was the only true and correct religion in the world.

This religion began at least 4000 years ago so it makes Christianity appear quite young by comparison. Some people assume that the older something is, the more authentic it must be, so Hinduism is possibly more authentic than Christianity. It has some polytheistic aspects, but it holds that the one supreme spirit is called Brahman – consisting of three gods : Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. Hindus believe in reincarnation and karma. Reincarnation is the belief that the spirit or soul moves into another plant or animal after death. Karma is the belief that each lifetime is carried forward to the next, resulting in a better or worse one depending on how each lifetime is lived. There are about 805 million Hindus worldwide.

There is no way anyone can scientifically prove or disprove Hinduism. Like most religions, the ‘evidence’ is not needed, and everything depends on the faith of the adherents. Each believer draws strength from the fact that others believe, and built into the religion is the thought that it is wrong to question it. Thus, safely fenced in by fear of doubting, and confidence in numbers, the Hindu believes that he (or she) is unquestionably right.

There is a story told of a man who went to catch an plane. By an honest mistake he took the wrong departure door. He sincerely believed that he was flying north as he took his seat. He looked at the other passengers and assumed that they too were flying north with him, and even when the plane began to land, he was sure that he was coming to his chosen northern destination, but of course he was actually south, and quite wrong. All the sincerity, faith and trust in the plane and other passengers was of no use to the man. He had assumed too much.

So when we come to examine Hinduism we find that 805 million people might have made some wrong assumptions. There might not, after all, be such a thing as reincarnation, and karma might be just a figment of their (sincere) imaginations. As we said, nothing can be proven scientifically one way or the other, so the whole Hindu religion rests entirely on the faith of the followers.

Born a Hindu.

Before we go any further, here is a testimony by a devout Hindu who became a Christian. The passage is a quote from the book Sadhu Sundar Singh ‘With and Without Christ’ New York : Harper and Row Publishers 1929. As you read it, you will notice how 1. Nature, Environment andNurture all play their part in determining the beliefs and lifestyle of Sundar Singh :

“I was born into a family that was considered Sikh by caste, and in which the teaching of Hinduism was considered essential. My dear mother was a living example and faithful exponent of its teaching. She used to rise daily before daylight, and, after bathing, read the Bhagavad Gita.

“I often used to read the Hindu scriptures till midnight that I might in some way quench the thirst of my soul for peace.

“I frequently asked the pundit to explain my spiritual difficulties for me.

“He said : “You cannot get to this grade of spirituality at once. To get to it, a long time is essential. Why are you in such a hurry? If this hunger is not satisfied in this life it will be satisfied in your next rebirths, provided that you keep on trying for it.”

“The loss of my mother and my elder brother within a few months of each other was a great shock to me. The thought that I should never see them again cast me into despondency and despair, for I could never know into what form they had been reborn, nor could I even guess what I was likely to be in my next rebirths.”

And so, nurtured and raised in an environment in which Sundar had little option but to adhere to the beliefs he was trained to accept, he was also given a nature which was open and honest enough to admit that the teachings he believed in were not satisfying his heart. At this time he was sent to a Presbyterian-run school.

“At that time I had so many prejudices about Christianity I refused to read the Bible at the daily lessons. My teachers insisted that I should attend, but I was so opposed to it that the next year I left the school and went to a government school . . .”

“To some extent the teaching of the Gospel on the love of God attracted me, but I still thought it was false. So firmly set was I in my opinions that one day, in the presence of my father and others, I tore up a Gospel and burned it.

After two days of despair . . . “I made up my mind that, if this prayer (that God would reveal himself to me) was not answered, I would . . . go down to the railway tracks and place my head on the rail . . .”

Hours later, at night, Sundar experienced a powerful vision of Jesus. “I fell to the ground before him. My heart was filled with inexpressible joy and peace, and my whole life was entirely changed.”

Sundar became a preacher of the gospel, first to his own people and then to the Tibetans, where he died while on a preaching journey there.

Granted not many people can claim such a dramatic and significant conversion, and granted there will be people who will question the authenticity of Sundar’s vision, the fact remains that his original beliefs were based on the assumption that his parents and others were correct. When he tore the Gospel up he was merely confirming the assumptions. When he began to search for peace in his heart, he still expected Hindu deities to help him. All his nurturing and environment had shaped him to accept the one religion he grew up with, despite the fact that, as he said himself, there was no way he could know if it was true.

It is possible for Christians to fall into the same trap. They can believe that the God of the Bible and the Christian faith are true without knowing any supporting evidence. The remainder of this essay is a refutation of this view – the Christian faith is, in fact, based on solid, verifiable evidence, and it is provable, to anyone who is looking for proof. Christianity is not based on assumptions, or blind faith. It is not based on the numbers who believe, or the importance of its advocates, nor is it based on circumstantial evidence. This is what makes Christianity credible, and its adherents can, without pride or arrogance, happily say “We are right, and our faith is the only consistent and reliable one.”

Christianity can be pictured as a stool with several stout legs. Each of the legs represents a branch of scholarship which supports the seat of the stool – something on which any believer may sit with complete confidence.

The legs consist of :

1. The reliability of the Bible prophecy. In every prediction – and there are hundreds – which has been fulfilled, not a single detail has been found wanting.

2. The Bible contains much chronology, history, geography, customs, personages and many other details – in all these areas it has been found to be absolutely accurate. This includes evidences for the great Flood – the vast fossil beds around the world, and the discovery by archaeologists of verifying artefacts which support the Bible.

3. The coming, work, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. The reality of Jesus is recorded many times in secular historical documents confirming the Bible in every detail.

4. The changed lives of Christians over the last 2000 years up to today.

5. Bible numerics. Every Hebrew and Greek letter is also a number. i.e. A=1, B=2, C=3 etc. When the words of the Bible are broken down into their corresponding letters, and then converted to the numbers they also represent, and when these letters are added up, vast, complex patterns of numerics emerged. A brilliant mathematician called Ivan Panin spent years bringing this astounding phenomena to public view.

The Christian faith is therefore not a subjective one, but an objective one. The value of the Christian faith is not in the one who believes it, but in the object of the one who believes. This is so important to understand we need to put it another way – if every Christian in the world decided that they no longer believed in the reality of Jesus, the life, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus would still be an objective truth!

How does this relate to other religions?

The Moslem and the Buddhist may have fervent, intense, unparalleled faith in Mohammed or Buddha, but their faith does them no good, because it is not faith which saves but the object of faith, and neither the Moslem nor the Buddhist have a risen Saviour to believe in. All their faith is wasted effort. In the same way, no amount of faith can make reincarnation or karma true. Even if every human in the world believed in these doctrines, the doctrines themselves would not become ‘truer’ because of the numbers of believers.

Supports for the credibility of the Bible are as follows :

The Gospel is based on eyewitness accounts.

“For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but wereeyewitnesses of his majesty”. 2 Peter 1:16

By this statement we see that the writers of the New Testament knew the difference between myth, legend and reality. See also 1John 1:1-3, Luke 1:1-3, Acts 1:1-3, 1Cor.15:6-8, John 20:30-31, Acts 10:39-42, 1Pet.5:1 and Acts 1:9.

The credibility of the Bible is self-revealing.

In other words, one does not need to defend the Bible, because it can well defend itself. (In a similar way, we do not need to defend a lion) There are many ways in which the Bible can be seen as unique – or at least the most outstanding book ever written.

1. Its consistency. It was written over 1600 years, over 60 generations, by more than 40 authors, whose lifestyles included a fisherman, a herdsman, a military general, a cup bearer, a prime minister, a doctor, a king, a tax collector, a rabbi. It was written in the wilderness, in a dungeon, on a hillside, in a palace, in a prison, ‘on the road’, on an island, and during war. It was written on three continents – Asia, Africa and Europe, in three languages – Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek. It covers a huge range of different subjects yet the overall theme which runs through it is the same. Yet despite the size, variety and age of the Bible, there are no contradictions and no mistakes – not even the smallest errors – which cannot be explained by careful investigation.

2. Its authority. Whenever the Bible makes a statement on any subject it has been shown to be correct, in prophecy, science and all other areas.

3. Its survival. No other book in history has been attacked, burned, criticised, sifted, vilified and written against, yet it survives.

4. Its teachings. No other book reveals so honestly and openly the good and bad aspects of all the people it speaks about – including kings, priests and leaders, and no other book contains as many accurate prophecies – which have (so far) all come to pass without missing a single detail.

5. Its influence. No other book has inspired and influenced the world as the Bible has done. It has been the basis of vast amounts of literature (i.e. Shakespeare refers to it many times), and technical books such as lexicons, dictionaries and encyclopaedias, and many other forms of presentation (drama, music, movies). It has been a good influence in every culture, at all times, and its message has provoked many reforms (i.e. the Reformation, the abolition of slavery, Christian education).

The credibility of Jesus Christ.

Christianity rests on this Man. If Jesus Christ was not real, then Christianity is finished. Believers may continue to believe in him, but if Jesus is not credible, then all faith in him becomes subjective, and is worthless.

Some people are under the wrong impression that the Bible is the only book which mentions Jesus. This assumption is quite wrong. Jesus existed in real-time history, and there are many references to him by writers other than Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, James, Peter and Paul.

Some of these other writers include :

Cornelius Tacitus

Lucian

Flavius Josephus

Seutonius

Plinius Secundus (Pliny the Younger)

Tertullian

Thallus

Mara Bar-Serapion

Justin Martyr

The Jewish Talmuds

Incidentally, the Encyclopedia Britannia (1977s) uses 20,000 words to describe Jesus. The article takes up more space than the articles on Aristotle, Cicero, Alexander, Julius Caesar, Buddha, Confucius, Mohammed and Napoleon Bonaparte.

Philip Schaff ( ‘The person of Christ’ New York : American Tract Society, 1913) wrote : “This Jesus of Nazareth, without money or arms, conquered more millions than Alexander, Caesar, Mohammed and Napoleon. Without science and learning he shed more light on things human and divine than all philosophers and scholars combined. Without the eloquence of schools, he spoke such words as were never spoken before or since, and produced effects which lie beyond the reach of orator or poet. Without writing a single line, he set more pens in motion, and furnished themes for more sermons, orations, discussions, learned volumes, works of art, songs of praise, than the whole army of great men of ancient and modern times.”

It is also noteworthy that all the religions in the world – except Christianity – consist of promises based on assumptions. Christianity consists of promises based on a demonstration. The fact is Buddha and Mohammed, to name but two, are still dead, while their followers believe all sorts of things about them – none of which can be proven. Jesus Christ died, but came back to life – so his followers have far more reason to believe in his promises.

Josh McDowell (‘Evidence That Demands a Verdict”, Campus Crusade for Christ, 1972) raises the question :

If God became a man, what might we expect that man to be like, or do?

The answer :

1. We would expect him to have an unusual entrance into this world

2. We would expect him to be sinless – perfect, the best example of humanity

3. We would expect him to have miraculous power

4. We would expect him to say amazing things

5. We would expect him to have a powerful influence over people

6. We would expect him to satisfy the hearts of sincere seekers for truth

7. We would expect him to have power over life and death.

Obviously, if you look through the New Testament, Jesus Christ met every one of these expectations.

The Bible defends itself through its accurate prophesy.

But what does it mean to us, when we find a book which contains hundreds of accurate predictions – predictions which were made sometimes hundreds of years before they were fulfilled?

First of all, it proves that there must be a Divine intellect in the universe, who is able to convert his knowledge of the future into words for people to read.

Second it proves that there must be a God. (Since Man unaided cannot accurately predict the distant future – to the smallest detail)

Third it proves that Jesus must be credible, since so many of the predictions focus on him.

Fourth it authenticates the Bible.

The Old testament contains over 300 references to the Messiah, covering his birth, time of arrival, work, effect on others, type of and time of death, burial, and resurrection. Statistically, the chances of one man fulfilling just a handful of these predictions gives us odds of several million to one.

The Old Testament also contains many prophecies about different leaders, nations and the movements of kings and their conquests. Out of all these hundreds of predictions, not a single detail has been missed.

Prophecy is God’s way of revealing his reality. No other religion in the world has a book with so many accurate predictions, and no other religion has a leader like Jesus. It is the fact that Jesus is not some dead leader, whose only legacy is a book of promises, which has drawn so many millions of people to follow him.

Changed lives

There is another proof that Jesus is the way, the truth and the life : the changed lives of his followers.

We are not here talking about hypocrites, or churchgoing traditionalists – adherents to a denomination rather than the Person. We are talking about people who have made the choice to repent of their sins, to receive Jesus as Saviour, and to obey him as Lord. These are the “born again” Christians (John 3:3) who truly represent Jesus, and who show by their lives that they are no longer living for themselves. Sure, they have faults, but they are determined to keep aiming at the example set by Jesus, and their lives show a pattern of faith and good works which indicates that something has happened to them.

We conclude this essay with an excerpt from ‘We Found our Way Out’, Grand Rapids, Baker book House, 1964.

“After two years of graduate studies at Stanford University, I went to work as a research physicist in 1956, studying the upper atmosphere of the earth . . . I became acquainted with the wonders of the universe – I also discovered that man had real problems on his hands with nuclear weapons of vast destructive power . . . life kept slipping by . . .I was not happy at all . . . I faced a strong possibility of becoming an alcoholic.

“I engaged a highly recommended psychoanalyst . . .I studied Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Zen. I was intrigued by the possibility of Nirvana. . . I wanted to die, but the thought that hell might await me kept me from suicide.

” . . .in 1962, some Christian friends appeared on the scene. I asked these new friends the same kinds of questions I had asked science and philosophy and psychology. I was surprised when they gave me satisfying answers from the Bible . . . Dr. Ralph Kraft, pastor of the First Baptist church of Los Altos . . . asked me “Are you a Christian?”

“No I am not.”

“Would you like to become a Christian?”

“The following days and weeks saw miracle after miracle of God’s working in my life. The bible is a supernatural book to me. Old problems and desires have faded away. For the first time I feel complete as a human being. After years of study and reading, which led me no place, I have begun to build a new understanding of reality on the foundation of the Solid Rock, Jesus Christ” (Lambert Dolphin, Jr.).

God and the Evolving Universe – A book review

This book, written by James Redford and published by Bantam Books, is one of several others by the same author. Their titles include ‘The Celestine prophecy: An Adventure’, ‘The Tenth Insight: Holding the Vision’, ‘The secret of Shambhala: In Search of the Eleventh Insight’, ‘The Celestine Vision: Living in New Spiritual Awareness’, etc. As the titles of these books suggest, the author is interested in exploring ‘spiritual’ themes. The question naturally arises at this point: from which basis does the author approach his subject – does he view things from the perspective of the Bible, or does he come from another direction? A great deal rests on the answer.

The author sets out the two main aims for which he wrote his book: 1. To discuss a wide range of capabilities and experiences which are available to humans, and 2. to ‘actualize’ these capabilities. He thinks that when people utilize, or take control of, their newly-found capabilities, they will enter “a new evolutionary step – a step as significant as the emergence of life from inorganic matter and the rise of humanity from the first tiny cells, a step that would bless us with spectacular new abilities and levels of experience.”

So before we even start into chapter one of this book, we know that the author is an evolutionist, and that he believes Man can rise by his own efforts into a higher plane of existence. Both these views are the antithesis of what the Bible teaches. The Bible story begins not with a random process of evolution, but with the command of a Creator. According to the Bible life is no accident, but a highly sophisticated and designed thing, with a purpose. As to the other view, the Bible describes not a gradual improvement of Mankind, but a fall from perfection into the toils and troubles of sin. Into this fallen world, estranged from God by its own willful rejection of God’s law and love, the Creator regularly intervenes to help and heal out of sheer mercy and compassion.
………………………………………………………………………………..
Chapter One looks at various times of heightened awareness, or epiphanies, which people occasionally experience, and the inference is made that these startling and memorable moments are a glimpse of some future stage in human evolution. Again the assumption is made that “Science has enjoyed no greater triumph than the discovery of evolution,” yet this statement has been hotly contested by many of the world’s greatest scientists, and is by no means a proven part of true science. As far back as Louis Pasteur, the theory of biogenesis – life arising from non-life – was demonstrated to be a fallacy. Life is utterly beyond chance, and even a single living cell is more complicated than a city the size of New York. For any kind of life to arise by chance is mathematically impossible, and the only basis on which the theory of evolution rests is the already accepted assumption that it is true. There is no scientific evidence to support it – only conjectures and theories, assumptions and guesses.
Most people are unaware that theories of evolution have hidden beliefs. These beliefs are religious and are deliberately kept from the general public who have been indoctrinated to accept evolution as science, and science as having nothing to do with religion.
Much as I would prefer not to spend so much time on the subject of evolution, I think it is necessary because the author of the book being reviewed has built his entire book on evolution. I will try to be as brief as possible.
Evolution is based on the belief that the past can be totally understood by reference to the present day events. This belief has the technical label of uniformitarianism. Some books call it “the present is the key to the past.”. In the New Scientist magazine, June 1982, Mark Ridford from the Zoology department wrote, “Uniformitarianism is not an empirical principle; it is trusted because of its obvious logic . . . the theory of evolution stands or falls with uniformitarianism.” Here we have a clear statement to the effect that uniformitarianism is not empirical, that means, not provable, or ‘we cannot test it’. This means it is non-scientific, or, a religious belief. And notice that Mr. Ridford says evolution “stands or falls” on this belief.
Evolution is also based on atheism, or its twin sister, naturalism. 99% of all television programs and public school textbooks, when they cover the origin of the universe and life, make no reference to a Creator. Evolution is implicitly atheistic. It says, in the fine print, ‘there is no God’, and ‘there is no need of God’. Life, says evolution, can make itself, and Man is the master of his own destiny, answerable to nobody but himself. Evolutionary material seldom slips up by saying outright that evolution and a religious view of origins go hand in hand, because this would reveal the real purpose of evolutionary teaching, and expose evolutionists for what they are – non-scientific.
The renowned evolutionist Isaac Asimov said “I am an atheist, out and out, – I don’t have the evidence to prove that God doesn’t exist, but I so strongly suspect he does not I don’t want to waste my time.”
Dr. Michael Walker, Senior Lecturer in Anthropology, Sydney University said, “One is forced to conclude that many scientists and technologists pay lip-service to Darwinian theory only because it supposedly excludes a Creator.”
Carl Sagan, in his TV series ‘Cosmos’ promotes as scientific his idea that the universe has evolved several times over, but he fails to inform the audience that he has a soft spot for eastern religions, such as the Brahman in which life is repeatedly reincarnated.
Page 7 of the book tells us that “some 15 billion years ago, from a mysterious something no larger than a single atom, our universe exploded into existence, and within a second was millions of years across.”
The origin of the universe was never observed, and its supposed explosion from a single point is a hypothetical argument based on carefully selected data. In other words, that everything came from an explosion is just another theory, which happens to fit rather nicely with the atheistic theory of evolution. Matter created itself? Where did the original matter come from? No scientist was there at the beginning to observe the event, and no scientist can repeat the explosion. Once again we have non-science dressed up to look like science, and the public is fed this lie as if it is proven.
Logic would suggest that explosions produce disorder, rather than the opposite. The universe ought to be a chaotic mess of rubble, a mighty scattering of dust and debris, but we see instead order, balance and what looks very much like design. Are we to believe that, contrary to present day observations, explosions in the past did not behave the way they do today? Why would that be? Some of the latest photographs taken by the Hubble Orbiting Telescope show that even the most remote reaches of the universe display not greater degrees of dust and decay, but galaxies showing exactly the same amount of order and shape as any galaxy close by. Evolutionary scientists expected the opposite, since their theory demands that the leading edges of the ‘explosion’ would be traveling faster, and therefore be in greater disarray, but they were totally wrong.
Page 7-9 outlines the typical Darwinian evolutionary plan – explosion, matter, formation of planets, life arising from non-life, sea creatures, land creatures, apes, Man . . . but this idea that living things can gradually change from one thing into another has several very solid and very scientific barriers in its path.
One barrier is based on the DNA. As we all know these days, everything we are physically is passed on to us through DNA and expressed as genes. Every species has a certain number of genes, and within the genes are many possible variations. Hence we have the dog species, but many different types of dogs, and we have the pigeon, or horse species, but many different kinds of pigeon or horse. This shows that it is possible to have variation within a species, but then we also know that because of the DNA and the genes, no two different species can interbreed to produce fertile offspring. All Man has ever seen is variation, but never anything like a new species.
It would be very handy for evolutionists if different species could interbreed, because that would give rise to new forms of life with the greatest of potential to evolve further, but this never happens.

Another area in which the DNA prevents evolution is the way it limits the number of possibilities it can produce. Because of careful selective breeding some plants and animals have been bred to the extreme of their potential, but once that maximum is reached, it is absolutely impossible to go any further. For example, a horse may grow only so big, a sugar beet may contain only a certain amount of sugar, and a human brain may be only so large. Evolution cannot cross this barrier, and unlimited time makes no difference.
A third area in which DNA forbids evolution is in the area of adding new organs or other features. For example, for a lizard to fly, it would need a huge amount of new DNA to provide for the growth and maintenance of wings. A wing requires a blood supply, bones, skin, feathers and muscles. Just as a human might draw up many detailed plans for a new style seat for a car, evolution needs an enormous amount of new DNA information in order to supply a plant or creature with new features. This information is never produced. It has never been seen to form, and the fact that if it were to accumulate it would have to be intelligently written into the DNA to integrate it exactly with all the other millions of bits of information, destroys the whole idea that evolution is random.
Evolutionists cling to the sinking ship of mutations to explain how random differences in DNA can lead to a new organism, but geneticists have found that random differences are either useless, or a hindrance, or deadly. Evolution demands that any change be a random or chance happening. The mathematical possibility that chance alterations to chemicals could produce something living, or that such random changes could alter legs to wings has been shown to be zero since 1967. (Moorhead and Kaplan, ‘Mathematical Challenges to the neo-Darwinian Interpretation of Evolution’, Wistar Symposium Number 5) At that time a prestigious group of international biologists and mathematicians gathered at the Wistar Institute to answer the question, “Could random mutation and natural selection be a basis for evolution?” Their calculations showed the probability was ZERO.
In today’s terms, think what happens if you randomly, or accidentally alter a computer program. It never improves the program. The hereditary information for a living organism is in the code – DNA. If you continue to make chance alterations to it, it only gets worse – never better.
And finally, the great barrier against evolution in terms of DNA is the fact that present-day observations have never seen a trend from less complex to more complex. In fact observations have shown that the trend is exactly the opposite way. Very complex organisms tend to degenerate, lose DNA, lose information, and trend away from the direction which evolutionists would prefer – ‘upward’ and onward, into greater and greater complexity.
The fact that species are locked into their set of DNA, and the fact that all the general trends for living things are downward, is evidence for the Bible story of original creation, and the fall into sin, with God’s judgement on all creation.

Page 10 briefly touches on the supposed fossil evidence for evolution. “Scientists . . . have found exciting fossil remains from thousands of plant and animal species ranging in size from microscopic organisms to tyrannosaurus rex.”
Most people still believe the fossil record provides the major proof for evolution. But Charles Darwin was very puzzled by fossils. He wrote, in 1859, “geology assuredly does not reveal any such finely graduated organic chain and this perhaps is the most obvious and gravest objection which can be used against my theory.” Since then further study of the fossil record has supported this view, and despite the confidence most people have that the fossil record proves evolution, it’s a simple fact that it does not.
David Raup, Curator of the Field of Natural History Museum, Chicago, which has one of the world’s best collections of fossils, said, “instead of finding the gradual unfolding of life, what geologists of Darwin’s time and geologists of the present day actually find is a highly uneven or jerky record; that is, species appear in the sequence very suddenly, show little or no change during their existence in the record, then abruptly go out of the record.”
Likewise Professor Heribert-Nilsson from Lund University, Sweden, said, “It is not even possible to make a caricature of evolution out of paleobiological facts. The fossil material is now so complete that the lack of transitional series cannot be explained by the scarcity of the material. The deficiencies are real, they will never be filled.”
So even after 160 or so years of intensive study, the transitional forms have never been found – no intermediate forms of life linking one plant with another, or one animal with another. This fossil evidence is far better proof of the Bible account of a global flood. God created plants and animals, complete and finished, and they then went on to breed true to their species, but the flood destroyed the planet, burying trillions of living things in sediment, which hardened into rock. Today the fossil-hunters are busy chipping the remains of these plants and animals out of the rock, but instead of seeing them as evidence of a global flood, they look in vain for transitional forms – forms they will never find.
Page 17 “The earth’s collision with a meteor sixty-five million years ago . . .caused the dinosaurs to vanish.”
Since evolutionists claim that humans appeared on earth about 4 million years ago, there must have been a gap of nearly sixty million years from the time of the extinction of the dinosaurs to Man. Unfortunately there are many reasons why this theory cannot be true.
The Bible describes what appear to be two kinds of dinosaur – Job 40, 41, and there are many cave drawings and rock carvings around the world which depict dinosaurs. As well as this there are many stories from Britain and Europe which tell of creatures which sound similar to various kinds of dinosaur.
But the fossil evidence is also suggestive of extinction by water. In order to form a fossil, a living thing must be buried quickly, and sealed from the air before decomposition can take place. As most of us know, even an elephant will not last long if it dies in a field. Natural decay and scavengers work very quickly to dispose of the tissues, and the bones are destroyed by nature’s little recyclers and the weather. But dinosaur fossils are chipped out of sedimentary rock. There are billions of tons of fossils trapped in sedimentary rock all round the world, including fish, plants, birds, insects and dinosaurs. Sometimes the dinosaur bones are found in strata which also contains the remains of plants and animals living today. The fossil evidence points not to a meteor, but to a flood, and the fact that no transitional forms of any dinosaur have ever been found suggests creation rather than evolution.
Page 19 contains the statement, “At the core of this book is our belief that the universe has a telos, a fundamental tendency to manifest its latent divinity.”
By these amazing words, the author rejects the evolutionary view that life is an accident, and adopts the New Age view that behind evolution is some guiding principle, some Mind, some Deity, but he labels that Mind a “divinity” and leaves us to decide just what exactly he means by this word. He cannot mean the God of the Bible, because this God has already declared clearly why He created the universe, and what Man is, so the author has rejected this true and living God, and chosen a god of his own making – this is called idolatry. The author has shaped a god with his own hands, just as heathen people chip a face into a block of stone and then bow to it.
But surely we cannot have it both ways? Evolution has no God. It is absolutely random. As John Lennon said “Imagine there’s no heaven, it’s easy if you try, no hell below us, above us only sky,” The universe, if we are faithful to Darwin’s theory, must be totally empty of any telos, any path, any direction. It cannot have a basis for morals, for religions, for humanity. Evolution empties all meaning and purpose out of life and replaces it with blind, random mechanism. The moment we allow any kind of ‘direction’ in we are betraying the theory.
So, by his own admission, the author cannot live comfortably with his own premise, and has added a “divinity” to compensate. By doing this he commits an act of great dishonesty, and also undermines any credibility he might have built up in his defense of Darwinian evolution.

Chapter two.
“Evolution entered a new domain with the appearance of humankind. Intelligence, communication skills, and other attributes of animal life advanced dramatically as our species formed newly creative social groups, harnessed fire, developed new tools, learned to speak, and tried to make greater sense of the world around them.”
The Bible presents a view which stands in stark contrast to this. God created the first humans and placed them in a specially designed area of the planet. At that stage the first humans were sinless, physically and intellectually and spiritually perfect, and as such they enjoyed a beautiful communion with their Creator. But they chose to disobey God and as a result they and their world were punished. The evidence of this punishment is easy to observe today – disruptive weather, burning sun, tornados, storms, floods, extremes of temperature, poisonous plants and animals, carnivorous creatures, sickness, deformities, death, and in the realm of humans crime, war and hate in all its permutations.
But Mankind fell from perfection into its present state because of sin, whereas evolution cannot speak of sin, and must push Man from apelike beginnings towards ultimate Manmade glory – all without God.
By rejecting the Bible account, the author has plunged himself into a morass of difficulties. Just one of these difficulties involves the appearance of language. For any human to learn a language, they need to be taught it by others who already speak it. The same can be said of reading. If you speak and read English, chances are you learned from people who could already speak and read English. Left to yourself you would not have a language, except perhaps a few grunts and gestures. So the origin of language is quite mysterious, if we try to explain it in terms of evolution, but its origin is far more reasonable if we see it as a creation by God. The fact that humans have a speech center in their brain and are therefore ‘pre-wired’ for language is also significant. No animal could ever speak, because they lack the brain part to process a language.
There are many distinct and different languages in the world. Each has its own set of thousands of words; each has its own forms of grammar, inflexions, vowels and parts. While there seems to be a scattering of words which all languages seem to have in common, by far the greater portion is unique to its own language family, and so no speaker in any one language can understand the speech of another language – unless they learn it. And it is hardly any help learning one distinct language in order to learn another because they are all so different from each other.
The complexity and differences found in and between languages cannot be explained by evolution, yet it fits exactly with the Bible account of a time when God “confounded the languages” of the people, and caused them to separate and travel to different parts of the world where they spoke their common language and built their separate civilizations.
Chapter three explores the limits of our perceptions, noting some of the ‘enhanced’ moments when physical senses occasionally seem to be amplified above their normal level, but page 82 points out that, “We can experience and develop clairvoyance and the perception of subtle energy.” The dictionary tells us that clairvoyance is “The abnormal faculty of seeing what is out of sight; deep insight or penetration.”
Clairvoyance is probably a universal phenomenon, because Man is a complex being, and the world is full of mysteries. Many religions have different stories to tell of ‘second sight’, and the ability to see more than others, to feel, hear and sense deeper things, and this is what we would expect if we believe the Bible account. God created Man, and the world, and since the fall the vast powers of Adam and Eve have been suppressed somewhat, but every now and then a little more than the average breaks through and for a brief moment humans enjoy a glimpse of what might have been. The evolutionary approach sees these things as a slight progression into a higher state of being, but logically, if one holds the evolutionary view, there can be no such thing as ‘progress’. By its very claims, evolution can have no direction, either forwards or backwards. It is a totally random process, in which ‘progress’ cannot exist.
On page 91 the author suggests that shamans working during the ‘Stone Age’ used ‘remote viewing’ to find game, and goes on to tell us that “it is considered to be a real power in most Hindu, Buddhist, Sufi, and Taoist contemplative traditions, and it has often been attributed to Jewish and Christian mystics.” On page 92 the author pulls together ‘remote viewing’, telepathy, UFOs and reference is made to an encyclopedia about extra-sensory perception. This is typical of the style of the book. The author passes like an avid shopper over a grab-bag of subjects, collecting them as fast as he can and dropping them uncritically into his trolley as if they are all as true and credible as each other.
To many people, all religions are basically the same. It is commonly said that all roads lead to God, and that it doesn’t matter which road one takes. This common view has led many people to believe that Christianity has no more to offer than Hinduism or Islam, and that ‘spirituality’ is more important than dogma.
The fact is, when one sorts out the core beliefs of the different religions, Christianity stands alone. It is possible to find many minor strands linking it with all the other religions, because humanity is bound by the same moral laws inherent in all hearts, but when one examines the fundamentals of the religions, the differences are so stark they appear as black to white.
Just briefly, we will run through the main religions and point out some of the main differences. There are not that many to look at: Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Shintoism, Judaism and Islam. (In another group we could place Agnostics, Atheists, Secular Humanists and Marxists. In the cults group we could place Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons and many other popular followings, but these are separate headings and will not be dealt with in this essay.)
For a Hindu to be saved, he must either: follow knowledge, become one with Brahman, be devoted to a deity, or follow ceremonial works. There is no salvation in Hinduism, only a seemingly endless cycle of birth, death and rebirth. Christianity teaches salvation by grace, and good works follow out of love and gratitude. A Christian can never earn salvation because it is a gift, received by faith.
For a Buddhist to be saved he must follow the five precepts, which are quite virtuous and if he is a monk he can add another ten. A Buddhist sees Man as worthless, having only temporary existence, and there is no place for redemption. A Christian has no set of rules, except only one, and that is to love others and do to them as he would have them do to him. To a Christian, man is infinitely valuable, because it took the death of God’s own Son to redeem fallen Man. While the Buddhist sees the human body as a hindrance, the Christian sees it as an instrument through which he may glorify God and sensibly enjoy the good things of this material world.
The Confucian has an ethical system which, if more people followed it, would make the world a much safer and better place to live in, but the ethical philosophy taught by Confucius is one of self-effort, leaving no room for, or need of God. Confucius taught that Man can do it all by himself simply by following “the way of the ancients”, but Christianity teaches that man does not have the capacity to save himself. Confucius taught an ethical philosophy which rejected the supernatural, but Christianity teaches that there is a mighty, and righteous God, who can accept sinful Man only in terms of the salvation He has provided.
Shintoism is a Japanese religion made of a mixture of other religions. One of its basic doctrines is the superiority of the Japanese people, as descendants of the gods, and their land above all others on earth. This fosters a feeling of pride, which is a barrier to accepting salvation by faith alone. Christianity teaches the equality of all people, and gives their origin as the offspring of only two created people. Shinto teaches the basic goodness of people as children of the gods, whereas Christianity teaches the basic sinfulness of people and hence their need of a Saviour.
Judaism reveres the Old Testament and believes in a still-to-come Messiah. Judaism accepts that Man is sinful, but looks for salvation in such things as sacrifices, penitence, good deeds and a little hope in God’s mercy. Christianity teaches that Jesus is the Messiah, and that His sacrifice on the cross ended Man’s search for atonement once and for all time.
Islam has some 450 million followers, and its name means ‘submission;’ or ‘surrender’. While Islam has many things to commend it, and many things in common with Christianity (such as a belief in one God, angels, respect for Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, a resurrection, rewards for the good and punishments for the bad) it diverges from Christianity in other crucial areas. It cannot accept Jesus as the Son of God, and they think Judas, not Jesus was crucified. Muslims live in a legalistic system and must earn their salvation, keeping the ‘Articles of Faith’ and the ‘Pillars of Faith’, and sin is seen as a failure to obey. Christianity teaches that we are all sinners regardless of how hard we try not to be, and that Jesus is the only one who can save sinners. Islam was founded by a now dead man claiming to be a prophet, while Christianity was founded by God the Son, now risen from the dead and alive for ever more. The founder of Islam based his teachings on untrue and inaccurate interpretations of the Bible. It presents a twisted view of the true God and robs him of His love, mercy and compassion.
The author moves through various supernormal experiences, touching briefly on them as he goes along. He mentions ‘the life force’, ‘ecstasy’, ‘love’, ‘out of body experiences’, ‘radiant heat’, and so on, then he moves into ‘transcendent’ experiences and quotes from the Indian mystic Sri Ramakrishna and who tells of his disciple Narendra. “Narendra, because of his Brahmin upbringing, considered it wholly blasphemous to look on man as one with his Creator. One day at the temple garden he said to a friend”: “How silly. This jug is God? Whatever we see is God? And we too are God? Nothing could be more absurd.” Sri Ramakrisnna came out of his room and gently touched him. Spellbound (Narendra) immediately perceived that everything in the world was indeed God . . . “
The Bible does not agree. It says that God created all things, and sustains all things, but it also tells us that God is separate from His creation. Logically, if all is God, then nothing has any real freedom to make choices, and all freewill is but an illusion. The gospel gives people the opportunity to either choose or reject Jesus as Saviour, but if God is everything, then there can be no choice. Interestingly, the account quoted above comes from a book called ‘The Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna’, which shows that it sets itself up as an alternative gospel to the Christian Gospel.
The author moves through more of the same, filling pages with quotes from far and wide, reinforcing the same themes of self-enhancement, and the ability we all share of harnessing the latent supersenses available to us, tapping into dreams, and energies, finding transcendent identity and seeing apparitions of the dead.
This last is on page 190, where we are told, “Osis and Haraldson found that many people near death have visions of departed friends, relatives or religious figures who come to “take the patient away,” helping them pass to another mode of existence.” A brief summary of this phenomena follows, and then on page 192 the author tackles the subject of reincarnation. Some interesting material is given which seems to support the idea that after death people pass into another level of existence, which is somehow related to a previous or following rebirth, or another life. The author, as always, takes care not to commit himself to any of the material he provides, leaving the reader free to accept of reject it, but the very fact that the author supplies this material gives one the impression that he thinks it is believable.
Reincarnation is an idea which began, according to the Bible, almost as soon as there were humans in the world. God warned Adam that if he or Eve ate of the fruit, they would “die”, and Satan said “you shall not die.” The Hebrew meaning for the word “die” as pronounced by God is “dying you shall die,” which means a progressive process leading to death, and this is precisely what happened. Adam and Even ate the fruit and began to die, living for a few hundred years as age gradually claimed them.
Satan’s lie has continued in many different forms ever since that first contradiction, and today we have people who believe in spirits, ghosts, poltergeists and various kinds of afterlife. A recent movie ‘What dreams may come’ starring Robin Williams depicted an afterlife in which a man stumbled about in a fantasy world looking for his wife who had gone to hell simply because she had committed suicide. People often talk about some dead departed being “up there looking down at us,” and many funerals give the impression that godly Christians and even the worst of sinners fly from earth to a heavenly realm as soon as they die.
The Bible teaches that death is the end of life, and consciousness, until the resurrection. It also teaches that the dead cannot contact the living. The Bible warns people not to try to contact the dead, because they may become entangled with evil spirits, phantoms, evil angels, apparitions, ectoplasmic visions, or demons, who often impersonate the dead departed. And the Bible says people live only one life, then die, and then come back to life at the end of the age for judgement.
Reincarnation, if it were true, would obviate a day of final judgement, because one could simply jump endlessly from life to life and never be accountable. Reincarnation opposes God’s words about death, and offers an alternative to people who reject God’s Word.
The remainder of the book covers some methods whereby the reader might be able to enter into some of the areas of psychic ability and supersensory experience already covered, then follow 67 pages of suggested readings.
From the Christian point of view, this book “God and the Evolving Universe’ is just another New age publication among many thousands of other similar books, with the same old familiar themes. It promotes the occult, dressing it up in the garments of science, pseudo-science, religion and philosophy. By way of concluding this book review I would like to look briefly at the subject of the occult, and then add a little advice.
The word “occult’ comes from the Latin ‘occultus’ meaning hidden, secret, or mysterious. In this sense, the occult can apply to operations or events which seem to depend on human powers that go beyond the five senses, or with supernatural effects. Under the heading of occult we can place such things as ‘witchcraft, magic, palm reading, fortune telling, ouija boards, tarot cards, Satanism, spiritism, demons and the use of crystal balls, astrology, numerology, necromancy, palm reading, horoscopes, and divining to name just a few things.
C.S.Lewis wrote, “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. He other is to believe, and to feel an unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased with both errors, and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.”
The Bible categorically denounces any and all occultic practices, see Deut.18:9-14, Galatians 5:20, Acts 13:6-12
The book under review promotes many of the things forbidden by the Bible, which raises the question as to just who the author is working for? Obviously he is not working to promote God’s Word, but in every way actually undermines its authority, so it seems he is an enemy of God and a rejecter of God’s Word. While he never tries to promote any single path to the “divinity” he claims lies behind the universe, he also throws every religion into the pot as if there is no particular way to that “divinity”, and by so doing he totally obscures the unique claims of Christianity. This is a common ploy by the enemies of Christ, who, like the Pharisees, add so much tradition to the truth they effectively bury it.
In today’s modern world the new Age movement has had a huge effect on the thinking of millions, though it is not easily defined. It has n specific founder, no headquarters, no definitive statement of beliefs and no regular meetings, yet it has a generally cohesive message. It holds many occultic beliefs, but also many other beliefs, and it seems to satisfy people from all walks of life. As David Spangler, a New Age spokesman said, “The new Age is a concept that proclaims a new opportunity, a new level of growth attained, a new power released and at work in human affairs, a new manifestation of that evolutionary tide of events which, taken at the flood, does indeed lead on to greater things, in this case to a new heaven, a new earth, and a new humanity.”
To understand the New Age movement we have to first of all see that it is not really “new” at all. The Time magazine said it is, “a combination of spirituality and superstition, fad and farce, about which the only thing certain is that it is not new.” Behind all its packaging, terminology, and plans, it is simply ancient occultism. Every so-called ‘spiritual truth’ in the New Age movement can be traced back to some pagan mystery religion. These satanically energized methods of obtaining otherwise unobtainable knowledge are paraded before the public like sweets – they include astral projection, psychometrics, radiance therapy, channeling, crystal therapy, iridology and acupuncture.
Satan knows that he cannot capture people into his web of deceit by directly marketing his products, so he dresses them up under new names, and sells them in modernized wrapping. This way he can smuggle his poisons into the ‘modern’ mind without being exposed for what he is – a liar, a murderer and a destroyer.
But the most serious error propagated by Satan is his teaching about salvation, because compared to this one, all the others are but red herrings. They occupy and ‘use up’ people’s lives, entertaining and intriguing their minds all the way to the grave, and once dead there is no longer a remedy. But if a person finds God’s salvation, they are set free from sin, death, the occult, and all the deceptions of philosophy and religion. If a person embraces Jesus as Saviour and begins to follow Him, they find a road which leads into ever-increasing light.
New Agers reject the Christian doctrine of humankind’s need for salvation. They believe humans are not fallen creatures, but in reality divine, or at least partly divine. Their brand of salvation means being rescued from ignorance, or being enlightened with ‘spiritual’ knowledge, or ‘becoming one with the universe’ (Hinduism). New Agers seek freedom from ignorance of one’s godhood, which they sometimes call ‘god-realization’. As Douglas Groothius writes, “To gain this type of transformation, the three ideas that all is one, all is god, and we are god, must be more than intellectual propositions; they must be awakened at the core of our being,”
This transformation is achieved by first looking “within” where all reality and truth exists, so salvation comes from one’s own self. In order to find this inner salvation, New Age people employ a huge number of different consciousness-changing techniques, or ‘psychotechnologies’ to aid the body, mind and spirit, including meditation, yoga, chanting, guided imagery, ‘energy’ alignment, and hypnosis. They draw into this bag of methods reincarnation and karma. The first is a “cyclical evolution of a person’s soul as it repeatedly passes from one body to another at death. This process continues until the soul reaches a state of perfection.” Karma is the ‘debt’ which accumulates or diminishes depending on whether one lives a ‘good’ life or a ‘bad’ life.
So salvation for many New Agers is a long process of many lives until one reaches a stage when one no longer needs a new birth. As George Harrison sang “ . . . keep me free from birth.”
But the Bible says that there will be some who are saved and some who are lost (Matthew 7:21-23, 25:31-34) Jesus said that on the day of judgement he would send some false followers away (Mat.7:23) There are no second, third or fourth chances for those who knowingly reject Jesus. Heb. 9:27 says, “It is appointed unto men ONCE to die, but after this the judgement.”
Ere is the essence of the New Age movement: all religions are acceptable because each one teaches essentially the same thing. Since all is one, and one is “God”, “God” (or divinity, or the Mind, or some other word for God) can be reached in many ways. All religious leaders are equal – Buddha, Mohammed, Zoroaster, Confucius, Krishna or Jesus. For the New Ager there is no heaven to desire or hell to fear, as Benjamin Crème a New Ager said, ”The path to God is broad enough to take in all men.”
The New Age movement talks about a new world, a new religious emphasis, one planet, Gaia, and harmony with the cosmos. It talks about world peace, sexual liberation, freedom to do one’s own thing, disarmament, prosperity, and inner peace, and for many people these half-truths and deceptions are enough to keep them happy. But the Bible is the written Word of God, and whether we get an emotional buzz out of it or not, what the Bible says is true. If people want to chase ecstatic and supersensory experiences they will probably find them, but they will never be saved through them. What people really need is the written assurance from God that their sins are forgiven, whether this promise makes them feel good or not.
………………………………………………………………
The advice I would like to offer to all sincere seekers of truth, is to read the Bible, preferably one of the gospels, and listen to the words of Jesus as you read. Compare his claims with what you have been taught by other people. He claims to be God the Son, the only Saviour of the world, the way to God, the truth about God and the life of God. If you are truly seeking after God and an experience of Him in your life, begin with Jesus. It will save you wasting your life chasing counterfeits and twisted, useless substitutes, and it will also rescue you from an eternity of regret.

Oil

A letter to the author of an article about oil.
Dear Oilman,
I was interested to read your article in the latest Canterbury Farming newspaper, about how people used to gather and use oil in the past. I would have liked to have seen a larger diagram of the fractionating tower with more information about the types of oil which are drawn off, but what you put into the article was worth a read.
I also noticed how carefully you introduced the article, by saying that “scientists believe that oil came originally from . . .” Did you word it that way because you know about other explanations for the origin of oil – or was it just good luck? You may or may not know that there are many scientists who believe in other processes involved in the formation of oil, who’s views differ greatly to their colleagues.
One view of the origin of oil is the millions-of-years scenario, as you described. It sounds logical and reasonable, and it is probably the most widely accepted view. I was brought up on it through all my school years, and I have rarely seen any objections to it. Given the fact that oil is buried under many layers of sedimentary rock, it would appear that slow processes over many millions of years are the cause.
The main alternative view is that oil (and coal) formed as the result of a catastrophic event, which formed the deposits very quickly. I think this view is worth considering because the same evidence which is used to support the millions-of-years point of view is also applicable to the rapid deposit view.
The millions-of-years view is based on several assumptions. One of these assumptions is that vast amounts of plants and animals – of which oil is comprised – were buried slowly and gradually covered by sediment – a process which apparently is not going on today.
Neither oil nor coal are forming anywhere in the world in the enormous amounts in which we find it. The assumption that the process was slow and gradual is rather self-defeating because the captured oil would have been lost through leakage if the process was slow (Millions of years). If, on the other hand, the process was rapid, we have the problem of quantity. When we see the enormous lakes of oil under the ground, this implies a vast amount of animal and vegetable matter gathered quickly before decomposition could occur, and ‘capped’ to prevent its escape by numerous layers of hardening sediment. Today we do not see vast amounts of animal and vegetable matter gathering together in anticipation of a quick burial, which is why the catastrophic view tends to make more sense of the evidence.
Another assumption is that oil takes millions of years for oil to form. Even this view is contradicted regularly by home-gardeners. A pile of poorly-ventilated compost can change into sticky, black oil (under suitable conditions) within a few weeks. You may find this example laughable, but the following one is more in line with this discussion:
I noticed in the news recently that a Western Australian firm is setting up a business which makes oil from sewage sludge. The sludge is heated without oxygen to 450 degrees C in one reactor, then in the second reactor, the resultant vapours are allowed to contact the ‘char’ residue from the first. This speeds up their breakdown into a diesel grade fuel oil.
No outside substances are added throughout the process, which thus involves heating without oxygen. The plant, which will run on its own product, will produce a net surplus of fuel.
The technology, described as one that “mimics nature” produces oil “in much the same way that nature produces oil . . . (but) it is completed in around 30 minutes instead of millions of years.”
(From the Australian Stock Exchange Release, Environmental Solutions International Ltd. Osborne Park, Western Australia, Oct. 25th 1996)
As you said in your article, natural oil is also believed to be formed from heating of hydrocarbons. Organic matter buried deep within the ground, in the absence of oxygen, is often exposed to elevated temperatures. This simple heating technology reaffirms that millions of years are totally unnecessary, given the right conditions. A catastrophe could produce oil (and coal) in a matter of years, given the right conditions.
Oil is called a fossil fuel because it comprises matter which was once alive but was, at some point in time, buried and ‘sealed’ from the normal process of decomposition. Built into the word ‘fossil’ is the word ‘ancient’, but this is an assumption.
Carbon-dating of fossils and of contemporary items has produced so much variation as to negate the reliability of the dating method. (I can give you numerous examples of this if required), and what commonly happens is that a circular argument arises, in which the fossils are dated according to the assumption that the rocks in which they appear are ‘x’ number of millions of years old . . . and the rocks are dated according to the assumption that the fossils which they contain are ‘x’ number of millions of years old.
A closed circle of reasoning arises, in which there is no room for the alternative view that fossils may be much younger than we think. Having excluded this alternative view, people follow the assumptions along and also exclude the possibility that fossils, fossil fuels and present-day rock-formation may be the result of a catastrophe, rather than a millions-of-years process. This single-eyed world view is both unscientific and prejudiced, since the same evidence which both views deal with can be interpreted in at least two different ways.
The fact that oil deposits may be evidence for a young, rather than an ancient earth, contradicts most people’s view of the world, but consider these points :
1. If oil deposits are as old as some say, is it not a wonder that they are still there? Leaking, over millions of years, should have reduced the deposits substantially, but the sedimentary cover is still intact.
2. The size of oil deposits implies a vast amount of original material, which, under present conditions, would have decomposed too rapidly before effective burial to occur.
3. The presence of whole trees (often standing vertically through the seams) in coal deposits implies massive, and rapid burial, rather than a gradual accumulation of dead or decaying wood. Present-day forests are not forming coal, so it would seem that a great amount of wood had to be buried and covered rapidly before normal decomposition occurred – some time in the past.
4. The sedimentary layers under which oil is found are common over the whole planet. Other kinds of fossil are also found in these layers, such as limestone, which comprises enormous amounts of calciferous marine creatures, (The White Cliffs of Dover), and ‘fossil graveyards’ in which millions of creatures are found jumbled chaotically together.
The presence of these general sedimentary layers implies that, at some stage, a vast amount of water and sediment was moving over the surface of the planet – a view which supports the possibility of a catastrophe rather than millions-of-years. (For example the formation of the Grand Canyon, 100,000 square miles, with sedimentary layers running horizontally across the whole width of the canyon, shows that the whole area must have been laid down rapidly.*)
Throughout this letter I have tried to avoid dogmatism, so please forgive me if I have ‘sounded’ as if I know all the answers. I am simply trying to sort out the facts from the assumptions. The main purpose of my writing to you was to present to you some alternative views, which other people, better qualified and probably better informed, may like to consider.
Thank you for bearing with me.
Yours sincerely,
Richard Gunther

Of monkeys and men

It is undeniable that, at least superficially, apes are similar to humans. Chimpanzees and orang-utans especially have many things in common, such as the use of sounds and facial expressions to communicate – a little like human speech, the ability to walk upright – a little like human locomotion, and the use of their hands to manipulate objects, or tools. Some primates have even learned how to use a simple form of sign-language, and many examples of problem-solving have been recorded.
Evolutionists, who believe that humans are but a branch of the primate family tree, have been thrilled at some of these similarities between humans and apes because such similarities seem, to evolutionists, to be ‘proof’ that evolution is correct. It also appears that humans have more in common with apes than was first thought. But the question we must ask is : Do similarities prove common origins? The answer has to be “No”.
Some examples of similarities exists in the mechanical world. There are many different kinds of vehicle (trucks, cars, trains, skateboards, trailers, lorries, motorbikes, farm bikes, scooters, bicycles, etc) and they all have wheels under them, but it would be absurd to suggest that all vehicles come from only one factory. In the Vegetable kingdom on could look at leaves and list the hundreds of different types, but nobody would suggest that all the trees in the world came from one tree which then diversified. In the Animal kingdom we could use any number of similar examples, such as legs, eyes, body hair, ears, tongues, and in every case it would be apparent that while two animals might share the same organ, they would never be considered the offspring of the one parent. For example, kangaroos, whales, snakes and birds all have tongues, but each animals is so different from the others that a common origin would be considered out of the question.
Evolutionists might here suggest that, given enough Time, anything is possible. In fact the whole Theory of Evolution demands that, over millions of years, a whale may turn into a kangaroo, or a snake, or a bird. This, they claim, occurs through two processes – natural selection and mutations.
Before we examine the question to which this essay is addressed, we must take a diversion and look at the proposed methods of evolution, because as long as there is the possibility that apes might evolve into men, we may not be able to show that apes and men represent two completely different and unconnected family trees with no common origin.
Natural selection.
Evolution is not something anyone can examine. All evolution, it is claimed, happened in the past, so there is no way anyone can produce observational facts. Evolution should be occurring today, but there is no evidence of that, because today’s science of genetics has established that in order to have any major changes in a species, new information has to be added to the DNA, and there is no known mechanism for this to happen.
Evolutionists cling to the idea that, given enough time, and given enough opportunities, DNA will accidentally assemble itself. The main way this selection can occur, they say, is by a thing called natural selection (formerly ‘survival of the fittest’). From the very first living cells, they say, right through to today’s highly complex creatures, natural selection is still helping to weed out the stronger from the weaker. There is no disputing the fact that this happens. Out of a litter of six, two die because they are small and weak. Out of a a hundred eggs, ten are eaten because their shells were thinner than the others. It is an efficient way of ensuring that only the best survive, and disadvantageous characteristics are not passed on.
But does natural selection drive evolution? Absolutely not. It is not capable of creating anything radically new. It cannot produce new information or add anything to the genetic make-up of the organism. All it does is conserve a species and helps to prevent deterioration.
The truth is, genes, DNA and alleles carry only a limited number of possible variations. A giraffe may have only one maximum length for its neck, and never any more than that. The sugar beet, selectively bred for centuries to gain the maximum sugar content, has never gone past a certain percentage. The Guinness Book of Records has documented many extremes past which no animal of vegetable will probably never pass because the extreme are also the limits to which the genetic variety will allow. No amount of ‘natural selection’ will ever alter the internal genetic blueprint, so acquired characteristics are absolutely unable to produce a new type of giraffe, let alone a new creature. The amount of time used is irrelevant. Billions of years would never make the slightest difference to the genes. Breeders might continue to cross-fertilise the best sugar beet with the best for a million years, but not a single molecule of extra sugar will be obtained.
Another example of this unchangeable rule is : the pigeon. Over the years many hundreds of different types of pigeon have been artificially bred, and a huge variety of shapes has been produced, but no new type or species of bird has ever appeared. Pigeons have remained pigeons, and pigeons have bred only with pigeons. The gene pool allows for great variety but never any more than that.
With dogs it is exactly the same. There are hundreds of breeds, with a wide variety of sizes, colours, coats and temperaments, but no new species of dog has ever been produced. All dogs are inter-fertile. The same can be said for horses, and cats, budgies, cows, and other animals which man has selectively bred over a long period.
Cross-breeding of the same species utilises the available gene pool, but it never adds anything to the genes – that would be the only way a new species could ever appear. Cross-breeding is an artificial form of natural selection, yet even under these intensive conditions, no evolution has occurred.
Another evolutionary belief is that the finches on the Galapagos Islands, (called Darwin’s finches) demonstrate evolution. There are several types of finch on these islands, all with specialised beaks and behaviour. These birds, it is claimed, represent several new lines of finch, each of which will eventually evolve into a separate species. In other words, given enough time, none of these finches would eventually be inter-fertile. This assumes that chromosomes and genes can be altered radically enough, without any direct intervention by Man, to produce any kind of creature.
But when Darwin wrote his book, he knew virtually nothing about genetics. Those finches are simply expressing different alleles, just as pigeons, dogs and cats do today.
It used to be theorised, before genetics became a science, that changes could occur through mutilation. This has also been proved utterly without foundation. For example, if a dog’s tail is clipped, it does not have puppies with short tails. Neither does foot-binding produce babies with small feet. Mutilation affects only the living organism, never the DNA. Obviously mutilation of the parent makes no difference to the offspring. The mutilation theory came out before genetic laws of inheritance were discovered.
Mutations.
Another proposed way for animals to evolve is by mutation, but mutations have been found to be either disadvantageous to the organism, or deadly. For example, fruit flies have been bombarded with radiation over successive generations, in the hope that some ‘lucky mutation’ may occur, producing a fruit fly with some advantageous mutation. No such event has ever ocurred. All the fruit flies, (which represents hundreds of generations) have come out deformed and less viable than their parent to survive in the wild.
One theory which evolutionists hold is that random damage to the DNA may produce a new variation of DNA from which may come a new and improved organism. Ultraviolet light has been put forward as one possible agent for this. But when we consider how astonishingly complex DNA is, it seems highly unlikely, to say the least, that a burst of disruptive damage could ever make an improvement. It would be like shooting an orchestra with a shotgun and expecting the music to go from amateur to professional. Random damge to something complex seldom does anything but hinder or destroy its viability – as anyone who has a computer knows. Even a slight change in the stream of binary data can shut the whole computation process down.
It is theorised that, with successive generations, slight changes may occur in the DNA. These deformities, or breakages, or chance mutations may be beneficial or harmful to the organism, depending on its circumstances, and the beneficial changes will be retained. But this theory falls down because inherited changes, or mutations, are never beneficial – except in artificial environments, i.e. deformed goldfish, or pugdogs.
The fossil record shows : 1. No transitional forms, and 2. That plants, animals and insects are all basically exactly the same today as their fossilised counterparts. Many creatures in the fossils are larger, such as the dragonfly, but no substantial difference exists between fossils (supposedly) many millions of years old, and modern organisms. This shows that DNA has been faithfully replicating good copies since the first creatures appeared on earth. It also suggests that the Bible is right when it says that God created life, and programmed it to produce copies of itself.
If evolution was true, we would expect to find evidence of both natural selection and mutation in the fossil record. In Darwin’s day a large number of bones had already been excavated, but nothing like the millions of specimens available today. Darwin himself noted that there was nothing in the fossil record to indicate slow, gradual change of organisms, but he presumed that the evidence was lacking only because the fossils were so few.
But many years, and millions of fossils later we are at the same dead-end. Despite the literally tons of fossils available today, there is still no evidence that animals, or plants, or insects, changed from one species into another.
Out of all the millions of fossils now discovered, not a single transitional form has ever been found. Surely, with all the fossils now available, we would expect to find just one series, showing how fish grew legs, and/or mammals, or reptiles grew wings. Surely, out of all the hundreds of tons of bones spread out in thousands of glass cases and along museum walls we would find something to show how tyrannosaurus rex and other huge creatures evolved from tiny animals?
But in the fossil record all the basic kinds of animals and plants appear abruptly without ancestors. The fossil record represents two things : 1. The sudden appearance of life, fully complete and viable, and 2. Mass extinction of life all over the planet.
The fossil record actually indicates mass extinction of plants, animals, birds and insects by violent water-action because fossils appear in sedimentary rock, which is formed by water action and sediments. Some creatures were buried alive while still eating, or giving birth. Millions of fish were buried and covered so quickly they had no time to decompose. Huge creatures like the largest dinosaurs were buried and swept together in heaps before they could escape. Most fossils are jumbled, torn apart, caught in positions of pain as they perished. Vast forests were swept into heaps and buried, becoming the huge coal mines of today. Other mountains of organic matter were piled up and covered, becoming our oil and gas reserves.
If apes and humans have no common origin, i.e. a single family tree, then there must be some other explanation for the appearance of apes and humans. Creation is the only logical alternative, but if it is accepted, it brings with it many other things, such as belief in a Creator, accountability to that Creator, and the possibility of a day of judgement. In short, once Creation is accepted, the end result is Christianity, because Jesus Christ claimed to be the Creator and Redeemer of this world and all that is in it.
“All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made”. John 1:3
“He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not”. John 1:10
“Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator”. 1 Peter 4:19
But despite all the science-based evidence that evolution has no reasonable foundations on which to base its theories, there are still many people who cling tenaciously to the Theory, so we will examine some of the claims about apes and Man, and see how they stand up.
The first claim that is occassionally made is that ‘life’ came from Space. The theory is that some primitive life, perhaps in the form of bacteria, landed on earth as it piggy-backed its way on a meteorite or comet.
This theory has several in-built flaws.
First, the heat which objects encounter as they encounter earth’s atmosphere is so intense that any living cell would be vapourised in seconds.
Second, even if ‘life’ did come from Space, it could not be anything but what it is, since evolution is impossible. Natural selection and mutations do not provide viable mechanisms for new information to be added to DNA, so if bacteria came from space, that is all it would ever be.
Third, the theory that ‘life’ might come from space begs the question. Even a single cell is an absolutely bewildering example of complexity, and it is impossible for anything this complex to appear fully functional and complete spontaneously. (It is ironic that, having proved beyond a shadow of a doubt in the 18th century that life could not spontaneously generate, i.e. Flies from mud, maggots from meat, mice from fatty rags, geese from barnacles) today’s ‘modern’ scientists are claiming exactly the same thing!)
Fourth, even if ‘life’ did come from extra-terrestrial parts, we still have no idea how that original ‘life’ came into being, or how it launched itself so successfully across the near-absolute freezing void of Space, nor how it survived the millions of years of travel, nor how it survived its violent, fiery crash-landing on earth, nor how it managed to mutate so successfully into so many life-forms.
The second claim is that because apes behave in similar ways to humans, therefore there must be a biological link between them. Similar behaviour proves similar origins, right? To see where this kind of faulty reasoning leads to consider the following :
In 1999 New Zealand’s Parliament considered a bill to give great apes certain legal rights. Other people are calling for a U.N. Declaration on the Rights of Great Apes. People in the U.S. are considering a lawsuit on behalf of a chosen chimpanzee to set a legal precedent.
Though thoroughly secular, the journal ‘New Scientist’ took a strong stand against the lawsuit, pointing out that humans and chimps do indeed have a lot of DNA in common, but they also have a lot of material which is not similar, and humans have more DNA than apes. Genes, said the journal, are not ‘cake recipes’, that is, by mixing the same ingredients in different ways you don’t get the same cake. A few genes different (like ingredients) can make a completely different creature (cake).
The journal also cited Ronald Nadler, a psychology professor at Yerkes Primate Centre, who said that just because the great apes look like us, researchers get “sucked in” to overemphasising the similarities, and overlooking the differences, which he says are “substantial”. He agreed that chimps should not be “sitting alone in their cages” but they did this because they were distressed, and not because they were human. (New Scientist, Feb.13,1999, p3, 20-21)
But if apes and humans are close enough to share legal rights, we ought to extend the principle further. If evolution is true, then all animals ought to have legal rights. And having included animals, from elephants to snails under a general Bill of Rights, should we not also include plants? Working from the simple premise, we are forced, logically,to ridiculous conclusions.
Human and chimpanzee DNA.
The idea that humans and chimps have close to 100% similarity in their DNA is worth consideration. Figures such as 97%, 98% and 99% are quoted, depending on who is telling the story, but what are we to think about this finding?
We have already seen that similarity in structure is not proof of common ancestry. The Porshe and the Volkswagon are both cars, but they come from different factories. The fact that they are similar in some ways is because of 1. The laws of Nature, and 2. The designers were all human. The fact that chimps and humans are similar is because 1. They are part of a whole earthly biosphere, and 2. They were both designed by the same Creator.
Alternatively, what if humans and apes were totally dissimilar? This might lead us to think that there were at least two different Creators. If all animals were totally different from each other, we might conclude that there were thousands of Creators. The fact that apes and humans are similar indicates that there is unity in Creation. The same God created all life using the same materials, but with different combinations and designs.
We know that DNA in cells contains much of the information necessary for the development of an organism. In other words, if two organisms look similar, we would expect there to be some similarity also in their DNA. If it was not so, then the whole idea that DNA carried the information to ‘make’ organisms would have to be questioned. Because chimpanzees and humans are the most similar, we would expect their DNA to be similar too.
But going even further from this point, it is also true that human DNA shares some similarities with all other DNA in all other living things. For example yeast. Because human cells can do many of the things that yeast can do, human DNA shares similarities in the coding for enzyme sequences and proteins.
But what of the claims about human and chimpanzee DNA being up to 98% similar? Human DNA has some three billion nucleotides in sequence, but neither the human nor the chimp DNA has been anywhere near fully sequenced, so it is premature to make such estimates.
Also, let us imagine that there is exactly 96% similarity, leaving only 4% difference. In that 4% we would find 120 million base pairs, or the equivalent of 12 million words, or 40 large books of information. In just 4% we have a tremendous amount of additional information, which could represent some hugely significant differences between humans and chimps.
By way of illustrating this point further, read the following two sentences and see if there is any difference between them :
THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION IS FACT-BASED, SCIENTIFIC AND TRUE
THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION IS NOT FACT-BASED, SCIENTIFIC OR TRUE
What percentage of these two similar sentences is different? The first sequence of letters contains 50 letters, while the second sequence contains 52 letters. The percentage difference is therefore very close to 98%, so we would expect to find that both sentences mean much the same thing? Logically yes, but in practice, no. When it comes to DNA we have the same problem.
Apes produce apes.
Because DNA is the origin of the information for all offspring, it is important to realise that, unless new information is added to the DNA, it can produce only what it is designed to produce. This is profoundly important, not only for Creationists, but also as a barrier to prevent change from one species to another.
Put simply, chimpanzees produce only chimpanzees, human produce only humans.
A chimpanzee may be given fantastic attention from birth, and it may learn a thousand new skills, but it will not produce offspring with these new abilities. All its offspring would have to be given the same treatment to get the same results. Abilities are not inherited. Brillian human parents may give birth to average children, while the reverse may also happen.
The Creationist is happy with these science-based facts because they indicate that God created all the different kinds, or species and from those first parents have come all the successive generations – all the same as their parents, except for the variations in size, colour and so on.
Apes and human language.
One way in which evoultionists argue human and ape common ancestry, is by pointing at similar abilities between apes and humans. But here too, the same inconsistencies exist. The use of language actually argues against evolution far more strongly than for it.
In order for humans to use a language, they first need to learn it. Left in isolation, or in the ‘wild’ humans do not learn to speak a language if they have no contact with other speakers of a language. (i.e. The ‘wolf boy’ of India, who was incoherent for years. ‘Tarzan’ was a notable exception, being able to speak good English almost immediately)
The fact that humans can speak a language is because they have a portion of their brain specially designed to operate one. A language requires a vast number of operations – the words must be processed, analysed, placed in correct grammatical sequence, shaded with emotion, produced through a highly complex movement of vocal chords, mouth and tongue. Chimpanzees have no ‘speech centre’ in their brain, so they could not speak a language even if they were taught from birth. Chimps and other apes communicate in other ways, but never by words.
But the fact that a language has to be learned means that in order for humans to speak a language, they had to be taught it from infancy by parents who could already speak a language. This means that, at some point in the past, humans suddenly acquired the ability to speak a language, which means that it is reasonable to believe that languages were created.
If we take the evolutionary view, we have some huge problems. Grunts, squeals and clicks cannot become sophisticated language, because language must be learned. All a primitive human, in the evolutionary picture, would pass on is more grunts, squeals and clicks.
But further to this, it turns out that there is at least one parrot that can rival chimps (and dolphins) in creative language and complex reasoning. But birds are not supposed to be closely related to humans because they have much smaller brains.
An African grey parrot called Alex, trined by Irene Pepperberg at the University of Arizona, according to Irene, “speaks English and means what he says”. Alex can count up to 6, and can recognise and name some 100 objects, including their shape, texture and colour.(Scientific American, April 1996, page 23)
There are some claims that chimps and orang-utans can recognise themselves in a mirror, and are therefore self-aware, but self-recognition is not the same as the human ability to be self-aware.
Daniel Povinelli from the University of Southwestern Louisiana, a committed evolutionist, has, after many years research, come to the (rather grudging) conclusion that : “chimps may not develop a mental understanding of themselves and others, at least not to the extent that pre-schoolchildren do.” He says that “Humans operate in a mental realm that may stay off-limits to apes and other animals . . . By 3-5 years of age, children conclude that their peers behave according to unseen beliefs, intentions, and other mental states” while “chimps may not try to decipher other’ minds in this way”. (Science news, Vo.149, No.3, Jan.20, 1996, page 42-43.)
In another study of apes and communication, some researchers have successfully taught chimpanzees some basic communication skills using a specially designed keyboard with 400 image-labelled keys linked to a voice synthesizer. Despite the appearance that the chimps were using language in the human way, the chimps were merely associating symbols with needs, such as “I write give grape” and “Please buy me a hamburger”.
Two problems with this kind of research emerge. One is the evolutionary bias of the researchers, who jump at anything which looks remotely like evidence for their theory, and the second is the editing such experiments go through, with ‘unsuitable’ responses being down-played, and ‘good’ responses being emphasised.
A note on “yeti” and “Bigfoot”.
These are two sources of stories about man-like monsters which some evolutionists like to believe because the existence of such creatures seems to support the evolutionary story of apes changing into men.
The Yeti, or ‘Abominable Snowman’ (‘Abominable’ means utterly detestible) or yeti by the Tibetans, is said to inhabit the Himilayan mountains at about snow level. It supposedly walks upright leaving huge footprints, is covered with coarse black or reddish hair, and has a face like a gorilla. It first came to the public’s notice in 1921, after English explorers on Mt. Everest reported seeing huge human-like tracks in the snow. However, no scientists has ever reported seeing such a creature. Sir Edmund Hillary believed that the huge footprints were “a small group of fox or dog tracks melted together by the warmth of the sun” (Merit Students Encyclopedia, 1:16, 1968)
Another explanation is “At certain gaits bears place the hindfoot partly over the imprint of the forefoot, thus making a very large imprint that looks deceptively like an enormous human footprint positioned in the opposite direction” (Encyclopedia Britannica, 1:35, 1992)
The Bigfoot. This is another mythical monster, also called Sasquatch by Indians, which is believed by some people to inhabit north-western U.S.A and western Canada – a sort of north-American counterpart to the Yeti. It has been variously described as “a primate ranging from 6 to 15 feet tall (1.8-4.5m), standing erect on two feet, often giving off a foul smell, and either moving silently or emotting a high-pitched cry. Footprints have been measured up to 24 inches (60 cm) in length and 8 inches (20 cm) across.”
A set of huge footprints was first discovered in 1811 by the British explorer David Thompson, and since then there have been hundreds of claimed sightings, and even alleged photographs and filmings, some of which have been proven to be fake.
None of the purported evidence has been verified, and most scientists do do recognise the creature’s existence.
But even if such a creature was found, it would not be a ‘missing link’ because it would have DNA, like all other creatures, and therefore it could produce only copies of itself and nothing else.
Finally, the most damaging information which strikes at the heart of the ape-human question, is the New Testament. This book describes the coming of a man called Jesus Christ, whose birth was fortold hundreds of years before. Not only that but his upbringing, manners, powers, and lifestyle were also outlined accurately. Jesus lived like no other man ever lived. He worked miracles before hundreds of eye-witnesses. He healed the sick of every disease they had, he restored the limbs of the crippled, and he raised the dead. He lived so perfectly morally even his enemies could not find any fault with him, but in anger they pushed him to the cross on the charge that he claimed to be the Son of God. This means they took his claims seriously, and not as an idiot.
Three days after the Romans had Jesus crucified, he came back to life and showed himself to many people over a period of fifty days, teaching, and encouraging them, then he rose into the sky, promising to return.
If humans are related to apes, who was Jesus, and where does he fit into the Theory of Evolution? He claimed to be the Saviour of sinful humans. He claimed to be the Creator of this world and all life on it. He claimed to be the only way to heaven, the source of truth, and the means whereby people may obtain forgiveness and eternal life. This is the most important question to answer.

Mammoth Elephants and the Bible

A television current events programme recently presented a brief item about a mammoth elephant, which was found deep in the northern hemisphere, where permafrost holds the land in an icy grip. As I recall, the corpse was discovered in the Taymyr Peninsula in Siberia, and had to be chipped from its frozen tomb, and then lifted as a rectangular block to a place where scientists could begin the slow process of thawing it and documenting each part.
The assumption was made, during the program, that the elephant was 11,000 years old and lived contemporaneously with humans. This latter statement is verified by human artefacts depicting mammoths (such as the Amerindian cave paintings), but the former statement is based on the theory that there have been many Ice Ages. As far as the evidence is concerned, there is proof that there was only one.
It is also assumed that mammoths have become extinct, yet there have been sightings in the Eastern Ural mountains and Vladivostok in Russia of mammoth-like elephants, and I have seen photographs of round-headed Nepalese elephants.  This indicates that the genes which produce the characteristic mammoth features are still available in other elephants.
The TV item showed the preserved mammoth remains contained in a single block of frozen soil, with the tusks poking out one end, then the scientists began their forensic work, using hair-dryers, to slowly examine every detail of the block.
The mammoths have long presented a mystery. It has been estimated that about 25,000 of these huge creatures were killed by sudden freezing, or some disaster. One specimen, in Berezovka, has been reported as still standing up, with undigested food still in its mouth, but most specimens are mangled and broken.
The usual question is “How did they die so quickly?” Was it a sudden drop in temperature? A flood? How could the land be lush and green one day, supporting huge herds of herbivores, then suddenly frozen and hostile the next?
One explanation is called ‘Crustal Displacement’, a theory once advocated by Einstein. This theory proposes that at various times in the past the ice caps have built up irregularly, causing a sudden shift of the whole mantle, due to centrifugal forces caused by the spin of the earth, at which time the whole crust, or outer ‘skin’ of the earth has moved a few degrees – like the skin of an orange slipping without tearing.
The landmass which was once nearer the equator and thus warmer, suddenly shifts to the pole and freezes – so the theory goes.
Personally I cannot accept this, because of two reasons. The first reason is because the Bible says several times that the earth is “established or “fixed”, that is firmly anchored. The second reason is because the Bible chronology does not allow sufficient time for crustal displacement to occur, nor does it allow for more than one Ice Age. If we follow the Bible, there is simply not enough time for all the theories to happen.
However, if we approach the mammoth question from the evolutionary point of view, we must include vast ages of time, in which almost anything can happen, but the Biblical perspective narrows the time-span down to a few thousand years. These tow views are mutually antagonistic.
One Biblical approach to the mystery of the frozen mammoths involves the global flood, described in Genesis. According to this account, water descended from above the earth, and burst upwards from below the land. This upward-moving source of water would have been warmer, perhaps also consisting of volcanic steam and molten rock. In this way the oceans would have risen in temperature.
Now contrary to what most people seem to think, the best way (or so I have read) to achieve an Ice Age is not to cool the earth. All this would produce is a frozen earth. The so-called ‘nuclear winter’, even if it were possible, would simply cause the whole planet to chill out. The most likely way to produce an Ice Age is to warm the oceans. This would produce greater evaporation, which would then precipitate in the form of snow. Within a hundred or so years vast areas of the colder regions of the earth would be blanketed in snow and ice and glaciers would begin to flow.
As I see it, after a century or so immediately after the (Biblical) global flood subsided, a rapid Ice Age ensued, freezing the north and south poles and covering much of Europe in ice.
Gradually the oceans cooled again and the precipitation eased, while the sun’s warmth began to have a greater effect, thawing the land, but leaving Siberia and northern Russia under permafrost conditions. Of course the retreat of the ice would not have been even or steady. There would have been years when it advanced a little, then retreated again, which is why scientists today propose several Ice Ages, but the same evidence which they quote to prove several ice ages, can just as easily be quoted to support an uneven thawing and retreating of a single Ice Age.
If we accept the Biblical explanation for the death of the mammoths, we can logically answer the question about their origin.
Originally God may have created only one basic elephant, with the genetic potential to produce all the different varieties we have recorded up to today. In the same way God could have created a single pair of cats or dogs, from which we have bred some amazing varieties, due to their inherent gene potential. This would have reduced greatly the number of land animal pairs which Noah needed to house for the duration of the flood, and it provides a logical explanation for the fact that many similar types of animal can successfully interbreed.
But getting back to the TV program, what we were told about the mammoths (and this is something I think everyone will agree on) is that a huge number of strong, healthy creatures were destroyed quickly and suddenly, along with their habitat. This catastrophic event flies in the face of those scientists who maintain that the history of the world has not been marked by any sudden changes. The frozen mammoths are a testimony to past disasters, and possibly a warning to us today not to become complacent.
If it has happened once, it could happen again.

Letter to a radio station

Dear Sir,
First of all I would like to thank you and National Radio for airing a ‘Science’ program. I think there is a terrible shortage of this type of program, (TV as well), and along with this shortage there is a certain irony, considering how important Science (and technology) is to all of us.
I also thank you for way you have endeavoured to reduce technical and difficult matters down to layman’s terms. This helps to bridge the gap between the qualified specialists and the unqualified public.
Now, the matter which I would like to refer to was aired on Saturday 23rd Jan. being the observation by a man interested in the evolution of birds. It was said that the different species were the result of “an apparent bursting forth of life” and a little later it was stated that “evolution took a sudden unexplained jump”. These comments were made because when the fossil evidence is examined there is, according to some scientists, a layer of rock in which zero fossils are found, and then, in the layers above it, a super-abundance of different life-forms. These layers are labelled Pre-Cambrian and Cambrian (Ordovician, Silurian – first plants, Devonian – insects, sharks, fish, etc)
In the program, it was also stated that life began as a simple, one-celled organism, which gradually changed until it was more complex. With this increasing complexity, the multi-celled organism began to diversify, until it produced all the life-forms we have today.
Right through my teenage years I was a strong evolutionist. I held the basic tenets of evolution firmly, and even drew diagrams and taught other children in my class at highschool with the science teacher’s permission.
However, I was challenged by the way good science works to re-examine what I believed. One thing which good science expects is accurate observation. When it comes to evolution there is no observational evidence. We have the fossils, but they are lacking in transitional forms. We have millions of life-forms all around us but none of them have been observed to change from one species into another. Even ‘forced’ mutation, as with the fruit-fly, every mutation was a backward step for the fly, not a progressive one, in which the fly was more viable (‘fitter’).
We have various dating methods, but they are all dependent on the assumption that whatever we want to date must already be very old. Our measuring equipment has to be adjusted to suit the assumption, otherwise it will not give us the result we expect.
We have the ‘appearance’ of things, but we have no proof that the laws of Nature have always operated in the way they presently operate. We assume that light has always travelled at a certain speed. We assume that the earth is old. We assume that the planets formed from a spinning disk of dust. No-one has ever observed any of these things.
But coming back to the ‘Eureka’ program, I would like to try to define a fossil, because so much of evolutionary thinking rests on fossil evidence.
A fossil, as I understand it, is an organism (or object) which has been enveloped and sealed under a sedimentary deposit, i.e. sand, silt, shingle, soil. The organism must be sealed very quickly, before normal decomposition can occur. In some fossils just the bones remain, but in others even the texture of the feathers, skin or scales can be seen.
A fossil must be formed very quickly. This is an extremely important fact. I mention it twice because if the process was not extremely rapid, there would be virtually no fossils extant today.
A fish, when it dies, usually floats on the surface, and is attacked by various scavengers. What is left, if anything, sinks to the bottom and may be scavenged yet again. A small amount of silt may lie on the scattered remains. Bacterial attack will also contribute to the process of disintegration.
Even in a sterile, low-oxygen environment, the flesh rapidly becomes soggy and falls apart, leaving no trace of the original structures.
In the world there are fossil beds of beautifully preserved fish. Billions of them. The silent testimony of the billions of well-preserved fossil fish around the world is, by the most obvious common sense, evidence of rapid burial, and rapid hardening of the encasing sediment.
Evolutionary assumptions claim that such fossils were formed slowly, over a vast period of time, but the evidence points the other way.
Now, returning to the original point, where the speaker on your program said that the different species he was studying were the result of “an apparent bursting forth of life” with the explanation that “evolution took a sudden unexplained jump” – these comments were made because of observations of the fossil evidence. Because the fossil evidence showed the sudden appearance of a wide variety of complex organisms, it was concluded that these organisms had come out of a sudden accelerated burst of evolutionary development.
Let me put to you another possible explanation.
The animals found in the fossil record were all alive and well, but they were suddenly buried by water-carrying sediment. Their remains, found in the fossil beds today, are evidence that they were alive one moment, and dead the next. They did not have time to decompose. In their countless billions, creatures in every part of the globe were suddenly buried by water and sediment. This catastrophic event produced the fossils, and the present-day landforms.
I have put forward, in the above, a viable explanation for the presence of fossils, but I have not yet touched on the matter of the origin of life. Of course, in this area, we are all free to have our own opinions, but Science is making the possibility of life just ‘evolving’ out of warm water rich in minerals increasing difficult to accept.
For example, the complexity of a ‘simple cell’. The complexity within a single living cell is mind-blowing. There are so many parts to a living cell, all of which interact, all of which depend on each other for their survival, all of which are interdependent . . . the complexity of a living cell is similar to the complexity of an entire city such as New York. It stretches credibility to say that all this could have arisen by chance.
Secondly, thanks to the science of genetics, begun with Mendel and his pea plants, we know that within a species, only the characteristics within that species’ genes can be passed on. It cannot produce any new characteristics because it does not have the ‘machinery’ to do that. A complete genome is incapable of producing enough new information to produce a different species (a different genome). There is plenty of variety within a species – for example the dog family – but dogs cannot become something which is not a dog. Mutations produce sterility or non-viability, and any tampering by Man with the genetic make-up of a species has, to date, completely failed to produce a new species.
It has sometimes been proposed that in humans, genetic mutations are occurring, but the only obvious ones are those which cause sickle cell anaemia, cystic fibrosis, thalassemia, phenylketonuria and others. These alterations in the genes are not beneficial, and could hardly be called progress.
The nature of matter itself is interesting in this context. Matter left to itself has never been observed to give rise to an information-storage unit – the living cell. It is easy to postulate some near-miraculous event deep in the past, when no-one was present to observe anything. All controlled laboratory attempts to produce anything remotely resembling a living system have failed absolutely. Some amino acids were once made, but they were all of the wrong sort – left or right-handed. Life cannot exist where a diversity of handedness exists. Besides, a living cell is far more than a collection of molecules brought together in an organised way. A cell must not only ‘feed’, ‘breath’ and ‘move’, but also produce a copy of itself on a regular basis, ‘defend’ itself, and a wide range of other things. Matter, left to itself, has no such properties, nor does it ever show any ‘interest’ in moving in this direction.
The law of entropy – which says that everything in the universe is ‘winding down’, losing energy, falling apart, etc – is another interesting factor here, because when we observe present-day life, we see a high level of organisation. This contradicts what we know about the nature of the universe, i.e. that it is running down. The second law of thermodynamics also shows us that the normal course in Nature is to move from complex to less complex. Taken together these two laws mean that our world must have been, at some stage in the past, more powerful, more complex, and more organised.
However, when we listen to the evolutionary point of view, we are told that our world (in total contradiction to the observed nature of things) was less powerful and less organised, and then, without any explanation as to how it happened, everything went in reverse. Simple became more complex, and random events suddenly became more organised.
Now in the case of a video tape, when you make a copy of it, your copy is not quite as good as the original. If you continue to make copies of each copy, you end up with a video which is almost unplayable. The observed present-day nature of things is similar to this. As each successive generation is produced, we see a decrease in the total amount of information, as it is copied over and over. If one works backwards we come, logically, to a time when all life was at its most complex. This point contradicts the evolutionary view totally.
With respect to your program, it is hardly a surprise to hear an almost exclusively evolution-based point of view, because that is the prevailing view at present, but the above may have proved that Science is by no means settled in one camp. There are scientists who hold that evolutionary theory is lacking in evidence, and in logic. These same scientists, many of whom are not even Christians, strongly believe that the same evidence which evolutionists hold up is a strong indicator for completely different conclusions.
I would like to close with two quotes, One is from Dr, Collin Patterson, Senior Palaeontologist at the British Museum of Natural History in London, Master Books, San Diego, USA 1984, p 89. The other quote is from Professor Whitten, Professor of Genetics, University of Melbourne, Australia, 1980 Assembly Week address.
“It is easy enough to make up stories of how one form gave rise to another, and to find reasons why the stages should be favoured by natural selection. But such stories are not part of science, for there is no way of putting them to the test.”
“Biologists are simply naive when they talk about experiments designed to test the theory of evolution. It is not testable. They may happen to stumble across facts which would seem to conflict with its predictions. These facts will invariably be ignored and their discoverers will undoubtedly be deprived of continuing research grants.”
Yours sincerely,

“Dear Mr. Gunther, thank you for your recent letter (24 Jan) regarding a Eureka! item that mentioned evolution.
In your letter you raise a number of interesting points. However, as you also state in your letter, these points do not reflect the prevailing views of most scientists. I’m sure you understand that a science programme such as Eureka! must, as much as possible, be consistent with the mainstream of scientific discourse.
“I hope that a difference of opinion on one issue will not prevent you from continuing to listen to Eureka! Thank you once again for taking the time to write.”
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..
AND HERE’S MY REPLY
Dear Allan,
thank you for acknowledging my letter. I was disappointed to see that you made no comment about any of the scientific evidence I presented to you.
As you said, “a programme such as Eureka! MUST, as much as possible, be consistent with the mainstream of scientific discourse.” You betray a personal bias here. There are plenty of alternative views circulating within “mainstream” science, all of which you deliberately exclude! Are you afraid of alternative views?
Please remember that it was “mainstream” science which said that if a train travelled at over 30mph the passengers would suffocate. It was also “mainstream” science which denied the presence of microbes in hospitals. “Mainstream” scientists have predicted many things in total disregard of the evidence, or even common sense.
I draw your attention to your use of the word “mainstream”. Mainstream means the “prevailing current or direction of activity or influence”. I think you are out of touch with mainstream scientific discourse – I suggest that you read ‘Darwin’s Black Box’. I also recommend the book by Jewish scientist Dr Lee Spetner – ‘Not By Chance’. Dr Spetner has a Ph.D. in physics from MIT and has taught information and communication theory for years at John Hopkins University. Both these scientists are mainstream, and secular.
And please note that it was “mainstream” scientist Ernst Haeckel (and his contemporaries) who vigorously expounded the theory of “embryonic recapitulation), that is, the theory that says that before birth the human embryo goes through evolutionary stages. But Haeckel had no evidence, so he ‘manufactured’ it, by deliberately falsifying his illustrations. Most informed scientists over the last 70 years have realised that the recapitulation theory is false – and it has been recently pointed out in ‘Science’ and “New Scientist’ – both respected ‘mainstream’ science journals.
You must not dismiss these facts. They call out from “mainstream” scientific discourse. They are relevant.
I would now like to draw your attention to the subject of evolution again, illuminating it exclusively with quotes from evolutionists.
The main thrust of the theory of evolution maintains that all life is in flux. Organisms are, it says, changing from one form to another, in a generally upward direction – that is, from simple to complex. (I pointed out in my first letter that this is in total contradiction to the observed laws of Nature), but if evolution is to occurring, this must be happening.
The fossil record, it is said, contains all the evidence we need to see the transitions from one organism to another. But is this really so?
Primitive to modern plants?
Everett C. Olson says, in ‘The Evolution of Life’ – “Supposedly somewhere within the group called algae lay the sources of the higher plants, the vascular groups. Whatever these ancestors may have been, they seem to have been irrevocably lost in the vastness of time.”
Prof. E.J.H.Corner says, in ‘Evolution in Contemporary Botanical Thought’ – ” . . . I still think that, to the unprejudiced, the fossil record of plants is in favour of special creation.”
Single cells to invertebrates?
Niles Eldredge, in ‘Darwin’s Enigma: Fossils and Other Problems’ says – “There is still a tremendous problem with the sudden diversification of multi-cellular life. There is no question about that. That’s a real phenomenon.”
Richard Leakey, in “The Illustrated Origin of Species’ says – ” . . . extensive searches by palaeontologists have failed to reveal the Precambrian strata rich in fossils of multicellular animals (the ancestors of many Cambrian animals) which Darwin believed must somewhere exist.”
Invertebrates to fish?
F.D.Ommanney, in ‘The Fishes’(Time nature Library) says – “How this earliest chordate stock evolved, what stages of development it went through to give rise eventually to truly fish-like creatures we do not know.”
J.R.Norman, in ‘A History of Fishes’ says – “The geological record has so far provided no evidence as to the origin of the fishes . . .”
Fish to amphibians?
Gordon Rattray Taylor, in ‘The Great Evolution Mystery’ says – ” . . . there are no intermediate forms between limbed and finned creatures in the fossil collections of the world.”
Kraig Adler, in Encyclopaedia of Reptiles and Amphibians’ says – “Although this transition (from fish to amphibian) doubtless occurred over a period of millions of years, there is no known fossil record of these stages.”
Amphibians to reptiles?
Robert L. Carrol, in ‘Problems of the Origin of Reptiles’ says – “Unfortunately not a single specimen of an appropriate reptilian ancestor is known prior to the appearance of true reptiles.”
Angus d’A Bellairs, in ‘Encyclopaedia of Reptiles and Amphibians’ says – “The reptiles arose from amphibians of some kind, but the details of their early history are not clearly understood and current ideas about them are in a state of flux.”
Reptiles to birds?
W.E.Swinton, in ‘Biology and Comparative Physiology of Birds’ (Vol.1, page 1) says – “The origin of birds is largely a matter of deduction. There is no fossil evidence of the stages through which the remarkable change from reptile to bird was achieved.”
J.Alan Feduccia, in ‘The Age of Birds’ says – “Feathers are unique to birds, and no known structure intermediate between scales and feathers has been identified.”
Reptiles to mammals?
Roger Lewin, in ‘Bones of Mammals’ Ancestors Fleshed Out’ says – “The transition to the first mammal, which probably happened in just one or, at the most, two lineages, is still an enigma.”
David Attenborough, in ‘Life on Earth: A Natural History’ (Readers Digest/Collins, page23) says – “Nor is there any fossil evidence of any consequence about their (the echidna and platypus) ancestors. So we have virtually nothing to help us link these creatures to any group of fossil reptiles.”
Sea mammals to land mammals?
L. Harrison Matthews, in ‘The natural History of the Whale’ says – “. . .we have no certain knowledge of their origin (the cetaceans), for the earliest-known fossils from the Eocene are already unmistakably whales, and we can only guess at their evolutionary history by inference.”
Alfred Sherwood Romer, in ‘Vertebrate Palaeontology’ says – “We are ignorant of their terrestrial forebears (cetaceans and sirenians) and cannot be sure of their place of origin.”
Non-flying mammals to bats?
John E. Hill and James D. Smith, in ‘Bats: A Natural History’ say – “. . .all fossil bats, even the oldest, and clearly fully developed bats and so they shed little light on the transition from their terrestrial ancestor.”
Richard E. Leakey, in a footnote in ‘The Illustrated Origin of Species’ says – “Unfortunately no fossils have yet been found of animals ancestral to the bats.”
Apes to human beings?
Lyall Watson, in ‘The Water People’, Science Digest vol. 90, May 1982, page 44 says – “Modern apes, for instance, seem to have sprung out of nowhere. They have no yesterday, no fossil record. And the true origin of modern humans – of upright, naked, tool-making, big-brained beings – is, if we are to be honest with ourselves, an equally mysterious matter.”
Robert B. Eckhardt, in ‘Population Genetics and Human Origins’ (Scientific American, vol. 226(1), Jan. 1972, page 94 says – “Amid the bewildering array of early fossil hominoids, is there one whose morphology marks it as man’s hominid ancestor? If the factor of genetic variability is considered, the answer appears to be no.”
One more quote which I would like you to read is from Malcolm Muggeridge – world famous journalist and philosopher – from one of the Pascal lectures, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada : “I myself am convinced that the theory of evolution, especially the extent to which its been applied, will be one of the great jokes in the history books of the future. Posterity will marvel that so flimsy and dubious an hypothesis could be accepted with the credulity that it has.”
You see Allan – or at least I hope you can see – the Eureka! programme is not really “consistent with the mainstream of scientific discourse” -as you claim. There are plenty of detractors within the ranks of secular, often atheist scientific thought.
Which is why I think your programme is a one-eyed, biased chunk of prejudice, and its high time you gave a fair and equal time to the hosts of scientists who totally disagree with its point of view – otherwise the program is not giving your listeners a fair go!
Yours sincerely,
Richard Gunther

Is man an animal?

From childhood I was taught that humans were descended from a branch of primates, and that primates were themselves descendants of other forms of life. The process of evolution, I was told, was caused by various factors – a slowly changing environment, mutations, and the struggle to survive which led to advantageous adaptations.
The giraffe was often used as an illustration of evolution by adaptation. This creature, it was said, attained its long neck because, over millions of years, successive generations of giraffe reached for ever-higher branches. The longer the neck, the more viable the creature was to survive. It was not until I read up on genetics that I saw through the fallacy of this idea.
The truth is, genes, DNA and alleles carry only a limited number of possible variations. A giraffe may have only one maximum length for its neck, and never any more than that. No amount of ‘natural selection’ will ever alter the genetic blueprint, so acquired characteristics are absolutely unable to produce a new type of giraffe, let alone a new creature. The amount of time here is irrelevant. Billions of years would never make the slightest difference to the genes.
Another example of this unchangeable rule is : the pigeon. Over the years many hundreds of different types of pigeon have been artificially bred, and a huge variety of shapes has been produced, but no new type or species of bird has ever appeared. The gene pool allows for great variety but never any more than that.
With dogs it is exactly the same. There are hundreds of breeds, with a wide variety of sizes, colours, coats and temperaments, but no new species of dog has ever been produced. All dogs are inter-fertile. The same can be said for horses, and cats, budgies, cows, and other animals which man selectively breeds.
Cross-breeding of the same species utilizes the available gene pool, but it never adds anything to the genes – that would be the only way a new species could ever appear.
Another piece of evolutionary interpretation I received from my school Science teacher was the idea that the finches on the Galapagos Islands, (called Darwin’s finches) demonstrated evolution. There are several types of finch, all with specialized beaks and behaviour. I was told that these birds represented several new lines of finch, each of which would eventually become a separate species. In other words, given enough time, none of these finches would eventually be inter-fertile. This assumes that chromosomes and genes can be altered radically without any direct intervention by Man.
But when Darwin wrote his book, he knew virtually nothing about genetics. Those finches were simply expressing different alleles, just as pigeons, dogs and cats do today.
It used to be theorized, before genetics became a science, that changes could occur through mutilation. This has since been proved utterly without foundation. For example, if a dog’s tail is clipped, it does not have puppies with short tails. Neither does foot-binding produce babies with small feet. Circumcision has been practiced by Jews for centuries, but no change has occurred to male Jews. Mutilation affects only the living organism, never the DNA. Obviously mutilation of the parent makes no difference to the offspring.
No such event has ocurred. All the fruit flies, (which represents hundreds of generations) have come out deformed and less viable than their parent to survive in the wild.
But let us suppose, just for the sake of the discussion, that Man is in fact nothing more or less than an animal. This would put the human species on absolutely the same footing, biologically as all other animals. This would level Mankind as low as the virus, the bacteria, and all other microorganisms. There would be no intrinsic difference between Man and flies, or Man and elephants. All of Man’s value-systems, his politics, his art, music, science, philosophy, and even his so-called spirituality, would be no more ‘valuable’ – as indicators of difference, that the bellowing of a bull or the hissing of a snake. Man would lose all value, to himself and to the universe, because if Man was an animal the universe would, logically, have to be absolutely empty of purpose.
This point of view, which springs logically out of the theory of Evolution, can be rather devastating. It destroys the foundation for optimism, hope, and meaning in life. It reduces positivism to a totally subjective decision on the part of those who choose it. It drains meaning from words such as “love” and “beautiful”.
But there are few humans who let the theory of evolution sink right down to their bellies. The nearer it comes to full acceptance, the more uncomfortable people feel, so, I suspect, most people keep the theory near the top of their head – as a theory without a conclusion. The theory itself is much like a car which one buys from a ‘sharp’ car sales man. You sit in the plush seat and steer as the man pushes the car out the gate. He assures you that the car is the best model, and as you roll down the hill you feel excitement at the suspension, the paint job, the quietness of the engine. At the bottom of the hill the car rolls to a dead stop, so you lift the bonnet to check the engine and find that it has none. Evolution is much the same.
What is an animal?
The definition of “animal” is quite complicated.
Animals are multicellular organisms. They obtain their energy from organic substances produced by other organisms. Their genetic material is contained within thin-walled cells with a distinct nucleus. Most animals are capable of moving around. As far as the definition goes, Man is therefore an animal, but the definition is limited, because it is based solely on biology. There is a lot more to Man than a simple biological definition.
For example, we could define “car” this way : “small, driver-guided, passenger-carrying motor-vehicle” (Hutchinson’s Encyclopedia, 3rd Edition). To some people this definition would be totally inadequate. To them a “car” could also mean emotive things, such as -
1. The hideaway they played in as kids
2. The gleaming, restored gift their parents gave to them in their teens
3. The flower-decked wedding vehicle
4. The holiday transport which took them to numerous beaches and parks
In short, the car would be a reminder of many happy and/or unhappy memories. Objectively and technically the car would still fit the simple definition, but that would be the barest minimum one could say about it. And what would “car” mean to a scientist, an oil-refinery manager, a handicapped person, a road accident victim, or a chemist?
It is the same with Man. One may reduce Man (or anything at all) to a short, precise definition, but if that was what we did all the time, we would simply be seeing everything in terms of labels and definitions, and denying them their richness or variety. We could reduce a Beethoven symphony to a brief musical note on a sheet of paper. We could stop a Beethoven symphony and label all the instruments, then admire the labels rather than the music.
Is Man an animal? By one simple biology-based definition, he is, but by another definition he is something far more. Before we look at this other view of man, we ought to clarify the situation.
There are, as far as I know, only two possible ways of examining Man :
1. From the point of view of evolution.
2. From the point of view of the Bible.
It is therefore a battle between Darwin and God. Darwin maintains that Man ascended gradually upwards from apes, God maintains that Man was created directly and instantly and from that point descended. There is no middle position which blends the two. If one examines the first two chapters of Genesis, there is no correlation between the days of Creation and the theory of evolution. Each Genesis day is qualified by “the evening and the morning” indicating that it was a literal, 24 hour day. This is carried through to other parts of the Bible, for example when God ordered the Sabbath, he pinned it to the fact that it took “six days” to create the world, followed by “one day” of rest. The following summary may help to show this :
Day One : Formless beginning, light appears, empty, rotating earth.
Evolution : Universe explodes
Day Two : Atmosphere and seas
Evolution : Billions of years, universe expands, cools, forms galaxies etc.
Day Three : Dry land appears defining seas, All kinds of plants start growing on land
Evolution : Primordial warm water, first living cells form by accident
Day Four : Sun, moon and stars created
Evolution : Sea creatures crawl on to land
Day Five : Water and sea creatures, and birds created
Evolution : Amphibians and land creatures grow wings
Day Six : All land animals and first humans created – glorious and perfect No death or decay. All animals eating only plants.
Evolution : Millions of years of killing, dying, mutations and natural selection, finally apes evolve, then primitive humans.
The two views are as different as black is from white. In the Creation account, God begins His universe fully powered up and complete. Man is created as a glorious and intellectually and physically and spiritually perfect creature. There is no death or decay of animal life, no ‘wildness’ or violence between Man and animals.
In the evolution account billions of years are required, the ‘Big Bang’ is given as the origin of matter and energy, and random processes are assumed for the origin of all complexity. Millions of years of dying, savagery and brutality are required, plus mutations and the battle for survival. Man is dragged up from the ape family tree and ‘ennobled’ with gradually developing skills.
Because the two accounts are so different, it is impossible to mix them together without doing violence to Scripture. Many theologians have tried to combine the two views, but never with any great success. Usually, in such attempts, the Bible has to be reinterpreted and altered to fit the theory rather than the other way round.
But there is some reliable Science which supports the Genesis account very firmly -
There is a very strong argument against evolution based on the 2nd Law of thermodynamics. This law describes basic principles familiar to us in everyday life. Put simply, the law states that any complex system, left to itself, will eventually break down into less complex systems. For example, fresh fruit goes rotten, animals age and die, cars rust, perish and fall apart. On a larger scale, the sun is burning up its fuel, comets disintegrate, and earth’s magnetic field is decaying.
Through time, the whole universe’s order and the amount of useable energy is decreasing. Ultimately all the useable energy in the universe will be gone – our universe is running down. Yet evolutionists require the very opposite to happen for their theory to work. Evolutionists require a continuing trend towards increasing complexity, and order, so that, over time, things become more ordered and more complex. Despite all the present evidence to the contrary, and the well established scientific law of thermodynamics, evolutionists maintain that in the past everything went the opposite way. As there is no way of disproving this, it is all a matter of faith on their part.
The same principle applies to complexity. Evolutionists would have us believe that such things as galaxies, planetary systems, photosynthesis, the migration of monarch butterflies, metamorphosis and the DNA code (to name but a few) are all the result of random processes which are the result of increasing complexity. Out of these few examples, we will look briefly at DNA :
The DNA code in each of our cells is enormously complex. No chemical interaction of molecules has ever come close to producing this ultra-complex code which is so essential to all known life. Only DNA can produce DNA.
DNA is an absolutely incredible thing. It is something like a huge computer program stored on tiny strands less than one trillionth of an inch thick. What are the chances of something this complex appearing through chance? Nil.
And obviously, if there was no original DNA, fully functional and complete, then there could never be a copy made of it. Logically, this means that unless DNA was ‘on the scene’ fully functional and complete at the very first instance, no life could exist today. So we are forced into one of two camps : either DNA, (that is living organisms with cells containing the complete DNA sequence), appeared fully complete by accident, or they were created. There is no other known way by which something so complex could have come together. (The chance of DNA appearing by accident has been likened to an explosion in a machinery factory producing a jumbo jet, or an explosion in a printing works producing the complete works of Shakespeare.)
But evolutionists cling to the idea that, given enough time, and given enough opportunities, DNA will accidentally assemble itself. The main way this event can occur, they say, is by a thing called natural selection (formerly ‘survival of the fittest’).
It is not capable of creating anything. It cannot produce new information or add anything to the genetic make-up of the organism. All it does is conserve a species and help to prevent deterioration.
The fossil record.
One of the main ‘planks’ on which those who claim that Man is an animal stand, is the fossil record. There, they say, is the evidence that life began simple and gradually evolved upward into more and more complex levels. There, they say is the proof that Man is an animal. The fossils tell the story of evolution.
But what does the fossil record really show?
Fact : Out of all the millions of fossils now discovered, not a single transitional form has ever been found. Surely, with all the fossils now available, we would expect to find just one series, showing how fish grew legs, or how mammals grew wings. Surely, out of all the tons of bones available we would find something to show how tyrannosaurus rex and other huge creatures evolved from tiny animals?
But no such series exists. In the fossil record all the basic kinds of animals and plants appear abruptly without ancestors. The fossil record represents mass extinction of life on a vast scale, and none of that is in a transitional stage.
What the fossil record shows is millions of animals and plants buried suddenly in and by sedimentary deposits. Fossils represent a vast cemetery, which stretches around the world. 80% of the world’s land comprises sedimentary rock, in which fossils are found. This indicates that at some time in the past the world was covered by fast moving water, which drowned and buried animals, plants and fish on a global scale. It is under sedimentary rock that we find coal – the remains of buried forests, and oil – the remains of organic material. collections.
The fossil record actually confirms the Bible story of Noah’s Ark, and disproves evolution.
Why does evolution have to be brought into this?
It is impossible to address the question which this essay is about without examining the theory of evolution, because the evolutionist is forced, by his theory, to say that Man is an animal. Outside of evolution there is no other explanation, other than Creation, and to most evolutionists the idea that life came from a Creator is untenable. Man, says the evolutionist, is “just” an animal. That is all Man is – nothing more or less.
But IF Man is just an animal – no more nor less, then :
1. Man cannot have a ‘spiritual’ aspect, because ‘spiritual’ implies more than the organic. Man may, he says, believe in ‘spiritual’ things, and even experience ‘spiritual’ feelings, but these are nothing but illusions.
2. Man is a machine. Man is nothing but a chemical skeleton, clothed in flesh which is itself a collection of chemicals. Man and all life are constructed out of atoms and molecules, which have no self-awareness in themselves. All of life is therefore a mechanical process, ultimately predictable and absolutely meaningless.
3. Man has no grounds for believing in Creation, a Creator, a purpose for life, or life after death. Man is not accountable to any Supreme being, because Man and the whole universe are the result of random unguided processes.
The strange things is, while evolutionists must ultimately hold these logical views – since they all flow logically and inevitably from the first premise, that life originated without the help of ‘God’ – very few evolutionists live consistently with their conclusions. They deny Creation but by their love of people, music and nature, they contradict what they profess, and betray their ‘createdness’ and actually bear witness to the Biblical point of view.
This is where we must examine the Bible point of view :
The writings of Darwin gave many unbelievers and enemies of Christianity what seemed to be ‘scientific’ arguments against God and the Bible. Darwin himself confessed (obliquely) that he had become a “murderer”, because he saw where his theories were leading – the ‘death of God’. In a universe where only random processes, mutations, infinite time and natural selection operated, there was no place for God. Life could appear spontaneously without any help, Man could arise from apes, and the universe could be an endless stretch of emptiness, with no God watching or maintaining it.
But since Darwin, all the supports which ‘science’ built to prop up his theories have been questioned, refuted, and pulled down. There is now nothing but faith holding evolution up. Evolution has therefore become an alternative religion to millions, which they cling to tenaciously, despite the fact that there is nothing substantial to base it on. Many evolutionists defend the Theory with the religious fanaticism of Islamic militants!
But on the other hand, there is the Christian answer.
Man, the Christian must say, is not an animal. But this answer leads to the question : What about the similarities between Man and animals? Surely the many similarities between humans and animals ‘proves’ common origins? This argument works just as well for the Creationist as for the evolutionist. The Creationist says that the fact that there are similarities between humans and the entire animal kingdom is logical because all living things have a Common Designer.
Another reason why these similarities exist could be because God intended Man to relate well to the animals, to be sensitive to them, and to care for them. God also intended humans to enjoy His creation.
An illustration. Suppose someone were to suggest that the motorbike and the airplane were almost identical in every way? You would agree with them to the extent that both machines have seats, wheels, motors, lights, and a large number of other features, but you would disagree violently over the fact that one machine is designed to roll along the ground, and the other is built to fly! Both machines use similar materials, and both are made essentially from the same materials, but they each serve very different purposes.
The application. Man and animals share many similarities. Both have blood, skin, organs, bones, some sort of skin-covering, senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch), both are mobile, both are made of cells, both breath, both move about, both have brains and a nervous system. Like motorbikes and airplanes, humans and animals seem to be made from the same things, but there is a huge difference once these similarities have been covered. Humans use written and spoken words to communicate, humans pray, humans are creative, and so on. While there are people who claim that animals do some of these things in comparatively limited ways, no animal has ever come close to the levels at which humans do some things. This should indicate that humans are, in some ways at least, not animals, or at the very least extremely advanced animals.
Another way of dealing with the question is to ask : Where did Man come from? The evolutionist would say “From random processes, over billions of years.” The Creationist would say “From the Creator”. The first answer is supported by conjectural science and no direct evidence. The second answer is supported by the Bible and all its statements can be tested – in the sense that what the Bible says is consistent with what we see.
The Biblical view of Man begins with Genesis 1:26, 27.
“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.”
In this statement we have many things to consider. First we see that God is declaring His intention to create a living organism, which will be, in some way, like Himself. ( The word “God” = Elohim = the plural form of El. Here, in this plural form, we have the Father, Son and Holy Spirit working together). God says this new creature will be “in our image, after our likeness” – or similar to Him.
“Let them have dominion” means that God intended “man”, i.e. male and female humans, to rule over, or supervise the animal kingdom.
So in just this one verse, we see that humans were created as superior to the whole animal kingdom. No other creatures were made in God’s image, or likeness. No animal was given dominion over Man. No animal was made to rule over the rest of Nature.
Before Adam and Eve sinned, this original plan of God worked perfectly. In order to emphasize Man’s role as lord of Creation, God brought the animals to Adam for him to name : “And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field;” Genesis 2:20.
(This verse also indicates that Adam had a massive intellect. Adam was also creative, cognitive, and he had broad imaginative abilities, a huge memory, and the ability to communicate using precise language).
Initially, Man worked in harmony with God, and Nature was at peace. Before sin entered the world, no animals were carnivorous, and the climate of the earth was mild. No rain (hail, snow or sleet) fell, and the weather was not erratic or violent. Genesis 1:29, 30,31, 2:5.
Some of the abilities which Man shared with God :.
1. Man could communicate clearly using verbal language,
2. Man could think for himself,
3. Man had a moral consciousness,
4. Man had a sense of Time,
5. Man was creative, inventive, imaginative.
6. Man was self-aware,
7. Man had responsibilities,
8. Man had free will morally.
God soon gave Adam and Eve an opportunity to exercise their freewill. He pointed out a fruit tree in the garden (or orchard) of Eden and told them not to eat it, on pain of death. But Adam and Eve were enticed by Satan (an exiled rebellious angel) to question God’s Word, and subsequently brought upon themselves the judgment they deserved.
But the implications were far wider than that. Because Adam and Eve were rulers over Creation, they and all their dominion came under the judgment. The whole Creation was degraded, or “cursed” or brought down from its perfection. The scientific expression is summed up in the 2nd law of Thermodynamics – the earth and the universe are presently ‘winding down’, wearing out, perishing, falling apart – “moving towards an increased state of randomness”.
Instead of the perfection which God began the world with, imperfections began to appear. The weather changed, animals became carnivorous, harmless plants degenerated to produce thorns and poisonous fruits and berries, fruit trees degenerated, producing small and unpalatable fruit, aging set in to all life, sickness and death worked in all living things.
Scripture picks up this theme repeatedly, showing that death came after sin, and not before. (Evolutionists believe that death was a normal part of this world for millions of years. The choice is clear – either death came into the world before or after Adam).
“For since by man came death . . .”1 Corinthians 15:21
“For as in Adam all die . . .” 1 Corinthians 15:22
“Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned:” Romans 5:12
“For if by one man’s offense death reigned . . .” Romans 5:17;
“For the wages of sin is death . . .” Romans 6:23
“The sting of death is sin . . .” 1 Corinthians 15:56
One of the great hopes which the Bible holds out to humans is that one day the present state of affairs will pass. Aging, violence, sickness, droughts, famines, tornadoes, earthquakes, blizzards, tidal waves, ultraviolet radiation, pollution, mutations, genetic deformities, and all the horrors of this present world, (those things which are not caused directly by Man) will one day pass. The world we are living in today is temporary. The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics has been operating for only a few thousand years. One day it will no longer operate. Death, aging and sickness will be no more, as demonstrated by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. As C.S.Lewis put it, in regard to the resurrection “Death worked backwards”. The 2nd law of Thermodynamics will be replaced by another Law, which will maintain all life at its optimum.
“For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. (Christians)
For the earnest expectation (a sort of yearning) of the creature ( All Creation) waits for the manifestation (showing forth or revealing) of the sons of God. (When Christians finally perfected by God, Creation will also share in this transformation)
For the creature (All Creation) was made subject (cursed, or degraded) to vanity (futility), not willingly, but by reason of him who has subjected the same in hope, (God)
Because the creature (All Creation) itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption (The 2nd Law of thermodynamics) into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now.
And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.” Romans 8:18-23
All the above points about fallen Creation are relevant to this discussion because it is consistent with the evidence that Mankind is not perfect, and all the marks of a fallen or degraded Creation are present with us today.
The present evidence in today’s world matches perfectly with the testimony of the Bible. All Mankind is sinful, and inherently rebellious against God. All Mankind has inherited the rebellious nature of Adam and Eve, Mankind’s original parents. The history of Man is a history of rebellion and sin – or what we usually call immorality. Children have to be taught how to be “good” – never how to be “bad” because all humans have inherited Adam’s rebellious nature. Humans have also always had a sense of right and wrong, and through all of history and in every culture, all morals have been similar to the Ten Commandments. Moral consciousness is another evidence of God’s creative influence.
In the Bible, Man is often viewed with wonder. For example, Job asks God : “What is man, that you should magnify (or make so much of) him? And that you should set your heart upon him?” (Job 7:17) and King David asks : “What is man that you are mindful of him? And the son of man, that you visit him?” (Psalm 8:4) and “Lord, what is man, that you take knowledge of him! Or the son of man, that you take account of him!” (Psalm 144:3)
The problem of Jesus.
In Hebrews 2:6-9, the writer suddenly brings Jesus Christ into the picture : “You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honour, and did set him over the works of your hands:
You have put all things in subjection under his feet . . . But now we see not yet all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man”.
From the above scripture, we understand that while all Creation remains under the degrading principle, one Man, Jesus, has overcome this process of decay and disintegration and gone to heaven, where he waits for the moment when he can return and transform all the rest or Creation.
The strongest argument against evolution is the Man Jesus. If Man is an animal, there is no explaining Jesus. If Man is the product of evolution, where on earth does Jesus fit in? There is no place for him in the theory, because in every thing Jesus did and said, he contradicted every main teaching of evolution.
Philip Schaff in ‘The person of Christ’ (Page 73) wrote : “Such was Jesus of Nazareth, a true man in body, soul and spirit, yet differing from all men; a character unique and original from tender childhood to ripe manhood, moving in unbroken union with God, overflowing with love to man, free from every sin and error, innocent and holy, devoted to the nobles ends, teaching and practicing all virtues in perfect harmony, sealing the purest life with the most sublime death, and ever acknowledged such as the one and only perfect model of goodness and holiness.”
According to eyewitness accounts recorded in the New Testament, Jesus worked miracles everywhere he went. He also fulfilled over 600 prophecies and predicted his own death and resurrection. Three days after he was crucified he came back to life, and again was seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses. Fifty days after his resurrection he rose into the sky, with the promise that he would return.
The gospel is the story of God’s love to fallen Man. Because all Mankind is guilty before God, God has done everything He can (except override Man’s free will) to rescue Man from the punishment which was pronounced on Adam and Eve, i.e. Death for sin. Jesus came and gave his own sinless life for all sinners. Through faith in Jesus, all people may now be saved, and not only that, but God also promises to end the deterioration of the universe, and restore it to the perfection of health and harmony it once enjoyed.
It is most logical therefore that Satan, the enemy of God, would want to destroy Man’s opportunity to be saved from sin. One of the ways in which Satan has succeeded in blinding people to God’s love is by concocting the theory of evolution, and through that theory he has spent much time inferring that humans are but the descendants of animals.
Is Man an animal?
No, according to the Bible, he is not. Yes, according to Darwin, he is, in fact Darwin’s Theory leads us to believe that Man and all animals are nothing more than collections of molecules and atoms clustered together by chance in a purposeless universe. Either the Bible is correct when it says that God created Man in His own image, or Darwin’s theory is correct which pictures Man as an ‘advanced’ ape.
There seems to be only one more thing to add. If God’s Word is correct, then all evolutionists are in for a terrible experience, when they have to explain why they rejected the Bible and the words of Jesus, and why they denied the evidence all around them.
Romans 1:18-20 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth (i.e. hold the truth down, or suppress it) in unrighteousness;
Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them.
For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse:”
What these words mean is that Creation displays the handiwork of God. The Animal, Vegetable and Mineral Kingdoms, by their order, structure, design and so on, show clearly the Designer’s work, and therefore testify that life and the whole universe are not the product of blind chance. God has provided ample evidence that He exists, and that the universe is not empty.
As Paul said : “For it is written, “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue confess to God” So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God”. (Romans 14:11-12)

How young is the earth?

“We are not afraid to follow truth wherever it may lead, nor to tolerate any error so long as reason is left free to combat it” – Thomas Jefferson.
Most children are brought up to believe that the earth and the universe are very old, that is, millions or billions of years old, but there is a large amount of scientific evidence which indicates that this conclusion is totally wrong. Much of the evidence indicates that the earth and universe are in fact only a few thousand years old.
Here is some of that evidence.
THE ROTATIONAL SPEED OF GALAXIES
The stars of our galaxy, the Milky Way, rotate around the galactic centre at different speeds. The inner ones rotate faster than the outer ones. From observations, including those made by the Hubble telescope, many scientists have realised that the shape of our galaxy does not match its proposed age, which is usually measured in billions of years.
If our galaxy is as old as 10 billion years, it should not have its present spiral shape, but instead should be a featureless mass of scattered stars.
This observed phenomena is called the “winding-up dilemma” and many theories have been proposed for it, all of which have come and gone as more evidence comes to hand.
The most logical conclusion is that our galaxy is really very young, and that it was formed and set in motion only a very short time ago – perhaps only a few thousand years – otherwise it would not have its present shape.
COMETS DISINTEGRATE QUICKLY
Comets are usually said to be the same age as our solar system, which is usually said to be about 5 billion years. The presence of comets totally contradicts this.
Comets which orbit close to our sun always lose a huge amount of their material. Even the biggest comet possible could not last much longer than 100,000 years at this rate, yet the average maximum age for a comet is about 10,000 years. If our solar system is as old as some scientists say, there should not be any comets in it.
Possible theories to explain this problem are that :
1. comets might come from an unobserved ‘Oort cloud’ which is said to be well beyond the orbit of Pluto,
2. comets might come from improbable interactions between passing stars which might knock them into our solar system,
3. comets might come from some sort of planetary effect.
So far none of these three theories have been substantiated by any observed or calculated proof.
The best conclusion which explains the presence of comets is that they are very young – perhaps only a few thousand years – otherwise they would not be there.
MUD ON THE SEA FLOOR
Every year, water and winds erode about 25 billion tons of dirt and rock from the continents. This material is washed down from the land by rivers and deposited on the floor of the ocean, where it accumulates as sediment on the hard basaltic ocean floor. The average depth of all the mud in the whole ocean, including the continental shelves, is less than 400 metres.
How old is the earth? Some theories say about three billion years. If the earth is three billion years old we should expect to find sedimentary layers several kilometres deep, but of course we do not. The present depth of sediment is consistent with a very young earth.
One theory for getting rid of the sediment is plate tectonic subduction. This means that the sea floor slides slowly beneath the continents, taking some sediment with it (about 1 or 2 cm per year). This process removes about 1 billion tons per year. Obviously, this leave about 24 billions tons to account for, which does not exist.
SODIUM IN SEA WATER
Every year, rivers carry about 450 million tons of sodium off the land and into the sea. Only 27% of this sodium leaves the sea in different ways, leaving the remaining 73% in the oceans. This means that the sodium content of the oceans must be steadily increasing, which presents a very difficult problem to those who say that the oceans, along with the earth are three billion years old.
The oceans should be outstandingly salty today if they are as old as the theories say they are, but if the earth is relatively young, then present saltiness (salinity) is about what we should expect to find.
EARTH”S DECAYING MAGNETIC FIELD
The total energy stored in the earth’s magnetic field has steadily decreased by a factor of 2.7 over the past 1000 years. If the earth is as old as some theories would have us believe, the magnetic field should have long disappeared, but if the earth is only a few thousand years old, the present magnetic field is exactly what we would expect to find.
BENT STRATA
In many mountainous areas, strata thousands of metres thick are bent and folded into hairpin shapes. The usual theory is that, millions of years ago, these strata were buried as relatively horizontal or straight layers of sediment, and then later bent, but modern observers have noted that the bending has not cracked or disrupted the layers.
The only possible explanation for this is that the layers of strata were formed very quickly, and bent into their present shapes very soon after they were formed. This means that the formations must be very young. Since no such formation of similar bent strata is occurring today, the formation of these shapes must also have been quite recent, perhaps only a few thousand years ago – otherwise they would not exist.
RADIOHALOS
Radio halos are rings of colour which form around microscopic bits of radioactive minerals in rock crystals. They are records of radioactive decay.
For example Polonium-210 radiohalos in three different layers of rock in the Colorado plateau indicate that they were each deposited within months of each other. The usual estimate for their deposition is hundreds of millions of years, but the radiohalos would not be the way they are if time periods of this size were allowed for.
HELIUM
All naturally occurring families of radioactive elements generate helium as they decay. If such decay took place through billions of years, much helium should be in the earth’s atmosphere. At the same time, helium is being lost all the time to space, but at a very low rate.
Working with the amount of helium being produced and the amount being lost, we find that earth’s atmosphere has only 0.05% of the amount of helium it would have accumulated if the earth is several billion years old. Logically, the earth must be much younger that the theories say it is.
Another measurement of the age of the earth can be calculated from the rate of radioactive decay in deep, hot rocks. These rocks are supposed to be billions of years old, yet their helium has still not escaped into the atmosphere as it should have by now.
The helium retention of these rocks shows that they must be only a few thousands of years old, otherwise they would not contain so much helium.
paleontologists
STONE AGE SKELETONS
Man, that is theoretical primitive Man, is supposed to have been on earth for millions of years. The Stone Age, as it is called, was supposed to have lasted about 100,000 years, during which time Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal men were supposed to have numbered around 10 million. All that time they were burying their dead with artefacts.
If this is so, then there should be about 4 billion bodies available to examine. Buried bones can last for many thousands of years – some scientists (paleontologists) say well over 100,000 years in good conditions, yet there are hardly any bones to be found.
Only a few thousand bodies and a handful of artefacts have been found so far – this implies that the so-called Stone Age was only a few hundred years, which means that earth’s history is a lot shorter than many people believe.
HUMAN POPULATION
In modern times human populations are seen to be increasing consistently at more than 1% per year. Allowing for disease, famine, war and so forth, and taking a much more conservative figure of 0.5% every year, we can work backwards to estimate the population of the world in the past. At the rate chosen, it would take only about 4,000 to 5,000 years, starting with four couples, to reach present world population figures.
RADIOMETRIC DATING METHODS
Carbon-dating is often used to determine the age of an object, but contrary to popular belief, carbon-dating has nothing to do with millions of years. Even with the best analytical equipment available today, the carbon-dating method can be used only to make estimates to an upper limit of 100,000 years.
What usually happens is that those who operate the carbon-dating system calibrate the measurements with great age already built into it. An assumption is made that the substance or object to be tested is already x number of years old, so this is added to the final answer, thus supposedly providing support for what was already assumed.
Carbon-dating can only date things which contain organic carbon – which rules out most fossil bones.
As an example of how unreliable carbon dating methods are : Carbon dating of wood found under lava, which came from the Rangitoto eruption about 200 years ago gave it about the correct age. But when the lava on top of the wood was tested, the result gave it an age of half a million years. How can the lava be older than the wood under it?
As an example of how unreliable carbon-dating is :
living mulluscs have had their shells carbon dated at 2,300 years,
new wood was dated at 10,000 years,
mortar from Oxford castle which is about 800 years old was dated as 7370 years,
and freshly killed seals were dated as 1300 years
while mummified seals only 30 years old were dated as 4,600 years.
How too, can a dating method which is so far out with known dates, be used to measure things in terms of millions of years?
FOSSILS
What is a fossil? Usually, it is a plant or animals which has been buried quickly and thoroughly by water-borne sediment. Most fossils show evidence of rapid burial because the impression made by softer tissue is still there.
Fossils are said to be millions of years old, yet some fossil bones have been found with the remains of blood cells still in them. How can this be, if the bones are millions of years old? The evidence points to a recent event, otherwise decay would have obliterated the tissues completely.
UNDERSEA RIVER-MOUTHS
When rivers reach the sea, they usually continue into the water, dropping their sediments in a fan-shape. The Nile is an obvious example of this, where the delta is used clearly seen on an atlas.
The average rate of silt-dumping under the sea can be measured, and projections made forward and backward in time, which in turn can give us an estimate of the age of the river.
At present average rates, the fan-shaped deposits should be enormously bigger than they are, if the earth is as old as we are told. But if the earth is only a few thousand years old, and present rates of erosion and silt-dumping have remained constant, then the earth must be only a few thousand years old.
PRESSURE OF OIL FIELDS
Rocks around oil beds are not stable. measurements have shown that they gradually give way to the enormous pressures exerted by the oil beds under and inside them. If oil is as old as we are usually told it is, then it should not be trapped so securely under the rock – but if oil beds are only a few thousand years old, then we should find them as they are at present.
The powerful pressures found within oil beds indicates that they and the rock they are a part of were formed about 10,000 years ago.
(It is also known that oil and coal can be produced in a matter of weeks or even hours in the case of oil, using heat and pressure.)
LAND EROSION
Present-day rates of erosion can be quite rapid. Some mountain ranges are being eroded away at 2 to 3 cm per year. This may not sound much, but multiply it over a few million years and the entire mountain range is gone. Even allowing for upthrust forces of the earth’s crust, the present shape of the earth, given a few million years, should not be what we see today.
But if the earth is only a few thousand years old, and given that erosion has been relatively unchanged, the present shape of the earth is what we would expect to find.
FORMATION OF COAL
Coal (and oil and gas) are called fossil fuels because they can be burned by Man. Coal is the remains of wood, mainly trees, which were buried very quickly and covered, or sealed, thus preventing the usual breakdown of the cellulose – as we see when a tree falls to the ground in a forest. Under the seal of sediment, the wood turns black and becomes coal.
How is a coal field formed. It must be a rapid event, because natural processes are quick to recycle wood if they are allowed to proceed. Coal fields are often very thick, sometimes whole kilometres thick, representing millions and millions of buried trees.
One theory has it coal is formed by forests constantly dropping leaf and twig litter, which builds up over millions of years. Nowhere in the world has this been seen to be happening. What usually happens is that the litter becomes humus, on which the successive generations of trees feed, thus keeping the layer of humus much the same over thousands of years.
Coal fields are full of tree trunks, which lie at all angles, as if they were tumbled and pushed roughly together. Often the trunks stand vertically through other layers, which shows that rapid burial took place, otherwise the upper part of the trunk would have long decayed.
Coal also often contains marine fossils, which shows that it was not formed in a fresh-water swamp.
Because coal does not require millions of years to form, its presence indicates that the earth may be much younger than some people would believe.
All the above can be said of oil too.
METEORITE DUST
Space researchers were worried that when the first vehicles, or the first men landed on the moon, they would sink into something like 60 metres of dust. This figure was arrived at by a simple calculation based on the presumed age of the earth and moon times the amount of meteorite and cosmic dust dropping down.
If – as it was correctly reasoned – the moon had been there for millions of years, there should be a large quantity of dust on the surface, sufficient to soak up any moon lander – hence the large, round feet on the lander, to help prevent it from sinking in.
If, on the other hand, the earth and moon were very young, perhaps only a few thousand years old, the amount of dust on the moon should be almost insignificant.
As we all know now, the astronauts found a very thin layer of dust, which shows that the moon is probably very young.
THERMODYNAMICS
It is a fact that all natural processes tend to go from a higher energy level to a lower energy level. To illustrate this, take a brand new car. It arrives as a fully organised machine, with everything working, clean and complete – but leave it outside for a few years and drive it for a while and it gradually falls apart. The paint work flakes off, the plastic perishes and cracks, the tyres wear down . . . eventually it rusts away and is no longer a car.
The world and the universe show the same process. Whole, complete systems are gradually winding down, or falling apart. Galaxies are flying apart. The earth is cooling. The gravitational forces in the earth are weakening. Animal and plant species are disappearing with no new species taking their places. The land is eroding away. The seas are becoming saltier. The atmosphere is degrading.
It should be obvious that a system which is slowly winding down must have, at some point in the past, been ‘wound up’ to start it all off. It should also be obvious that no disorganised collection of things is working the other way today – that is, nowhere do we find the opposite to the laws of thermodynamics. Disorder never forms into order without some external help. (For example, a house left to itself, will not keep itself clean and tidy without an intelligent organiser).
CONCLUSION
Reasons why people believe that the earth is millions of years old :
1. They were taught it at school,
2. They think science in general teaches this unanimously
3. They get this message from books, videos, movies, advertising, television programs, songs, paintings, and they hear it from experts in teaching positions,
4. They hardly ever hear the other side of the argument

God and the evolving universe

………………………………………………………………………………..

Evolution and the Two Laws of Thermodynamics

Energy cannot be created or destroyed.

Mass equals energy and energy equals mass.

This is known as the Law of Conservation of energy.

All the energy in the universe always remains exactly the same moment by moment, regardless of what form it is in – matter, light, heat, etc.

Energy is defined as “capacity for doing work”

We see how energy is used in things which involve :

Mechanical things,

Electrical things,

Chemical reactions,

Light emitters,

Heat emitters,

Sound emitters, etc.

For example, electrical energy makes a bell ring. The energy is now converted to sound, heat and mechanical energy. Or, a match is struck and the original mechanical energy is transformed into a chemical reaction, which produces heat, light and chemical reactants (oxides etc)

In all these energy systems, heat is produced, which is virtually never recovered for further work. The end result of virtually all energy equations is unusable heat energy.

The first Law of Thermodynamics (Entropy) is another way of stating the Conservation of energy. Energy can be transformed into other forms of energy or even into matter, but no new energy is ever produced. For example, it is impossible to make a machine which produces more energy than it uses.

All processes in the universe involve transformations of energy. Mechanical, geological, biological, tidal, photosynthesis, digestion, speech, painting, thinking, etc. Over time, all these processes use energy and produce heat.

The theory of Evolution would require that, for the present universe to exist as it is today, the First Law of thermodynamics would have to operate it the exact opposite direction in the past. In other words, over time all systems produced more energy than they lost. In practical terms, this would mean that stars fuelled themselves to burn, spiral galaxies wound themselves up before unwinding, and life started as highly complex and thereafter began to deteriorate. Matter, and therefore energy, would have had to simply appear, without an origin.

But the Bible says that God created the universe, and when He did this, he started it fully powered, with all energy at its maximum, all stars fully fuelled, all galaxies spinning at their maximum speed, and all life at its most organised and perfect.

The Bible describes this as “finished” -see Gen 2:1-3, Ex.20:11, Ex. 31:17, Psalm 33:6,9, Neh.9:6, 2Pet. 3:5, Heb. 4:3 and Heb. 4:10.

The theory of the ‘Big Bang’ origin of the universe – a desperate attempt to bypass creation – also flies in the face of this Law of Conservation of energy, because it postulates that (without any supernatural help) the entire universe appeared from nowhere and literally exploded into its present shape! Logically, if matter and energy can appear like this in the past, it could happen at any other time, in the present, anywhere, but of course it never has been seen to happen because today the Law of Conservation of energy is accepted as operating reliably everywhere. The energy/mass of the present universe is the sum total of all the mass/energy which God originally created, and when He did this, He arranged it in a balanced, ordered and beautiful way. A ‘Big Bang’ would produce nothing but chaos, and it would totally contradict the First Law of Thermodynamics.

The second Law of Thermodynamics states that all processes go towards a condition of greater probability. (Known as entropy). This means, in practical terms, that all complex things are gradually breaking down into simpler things, energy is being lost as heat, and the whole universe is moving inexorably towards a point when there will be no more useful energy left to do work. This is called the ‘Heat Death’ of the universe.

Comets disintegrate, satellite orbits slow down, (i.e. the rings of Saturn, and the planetary moons are gradually collapsing inwards or spiraling away), the fuel in the stars burns up, stars explode and disintegrate, radioactive substances lose particles until they are reduced to their most basic level, living things gradually age and finally die, and, in a more homely way, that brand new car in the garage will eventually rust, crack, perish, fade and wear out. Entropy increases all the time in an open system.

It may appear that life has beaten entropy, since it looks as if a highly complex organism appears out of increasing entropy. Life seems to be going the other way, but this is only an illusion. Thanks to DNA the mechanics of life can, for a short time, use the energy from the environment to survive, but eventually, due to mutations and general disabilities increasing, all life forms finally dissolve back to the disorganised materials they started as. (“Dust”)

The whole universe is subject to the Second Law of Thermodynamics.

Yet the evolutionary theory claims that, in the past, everything went the other way. It is claimed that simple life gained more and more genetic information and became more complex. Despite the fact that everything decays and ages and dies, evolutionists insist that in the past things went the other way. They claim that mutations and natural selection actually produced bigger, better, and stronger forms of life, despite the fact that mutations are almost always harmful, and natural selection has never done a thing for genetics except weed out the weaker life forms from the stronger.

Because no new information is ever added by natural selection, no species can ever be anything but what it is. Information may be lost, but never gained – for example the many dog breeds demonstrate the potential locked in the genes for variety, but no new kind of animals has ever emerged because that would require a mass of new genetic information, which never occurs.

Psalm 102:25, Is.51:6, Rom.8:20, 1Pet 1:24, Ecc.3:20 and Mat. 24:35.

So, because of these two Laws, Conservation of Energy and Entropy, the theory of evolution is the exact opposite to what is acknowledged today as correct science. The Bible, in the end, is correct, and the theory of evolution totally in error.

Crustal Displacement and Biblical Chronology

There are many theories about the exact geological history of the world. Those which come from the Uniformitarian point of view maintain that most of the present land forms were caused by small forces acting over long periods – millions of years. Those which come from the Creationist point of view maintain that the same landforms are largely the result of large forces acting over short periods – thousands of years. The division is between slow and steady, or fast and sudden.

These two points of view stand at opposite sides of a line, and there is no way they can be reconciled. Because of the many in-built assumptions within each point of view there is no bridge between them, no agreement, no synthesis. Either the world is young or it is extremely old. Either there have been global catastrophes or there have not.

There is a theory, which has been promoted by many scientists and writers, that Mankind’s history goes back tens of thousands of years, and that, at some time in the distant past, the south magnetic pole slipped, or the land mass itself slipped, causing global flooding and vast amounts of damage and death. One such theorist is Graham Hancock, author of ‘Fingerprints of the Gods’, a book in which he suggests that many huge-stone ruins in Egypt (i.e. the three main pyramids, etc) and South America, (Aztec, Olmec, Inca) and elsewhere, are the remains of an ancient civilisation which was destroyed by a sudden disaster, caused by the continent of Antarctica slipping south, or something else equally devastating.

This theory tries to combine the ancient-Earth view, with the periodic-disaster view. Despite its many interesting features, it goes against the Biblical chronology, and undermines many of the Bible’s basic teachings.

Before dealing with the many aspects of the debate, we will summarise the sequence of geological history of planet Earth as it is presented by the Bible. After that we will look at the opposing views, as presented by those who think in terms of millions of years.

Biblical chronology covering the very early history of Man is not absolutely clear. There is some leeway as to exact dates and years – the Bible has not gone to any great lengths to describe landforms or geological processes, nor has it listed the exact direction of human migrations, or the cultures, architecture or skills of these people.  Yet despite the brief and general account, every detail in the inspired text which we do have is exact and full of meaning.

1. Creation week (started about 4004 BC – Bullinger’s Companion Bible date)

2. The family line from Adam to Noah.

3. The global Flood (about 2350 BC)

4. The repopulation of the world in one area from Noah’s descendants.

5. The tower of Babel dispersal of people in separate language groups.

6. Somewhere during the post-flood time an Ice Age occurred which lasted about 500 years.

7. Nations grew and developed from then on, in their separate lands, sometimes thriving, sometimes decaying and disappearing.

8. About the year 1000 AD world population began to burgeon.

Every single part of the above summary is currently being attacked by Uniformitarian views.

Working with what we know (or from what we can safely assume to be true) we will now consider some of the Bible details.

1. Creation week (started about 4004 BC – Bullinger’s Companion Bible date)

Adam and Eve were created by God. They were supremely perfect and pure. There was no slow development of their minds, no educational process. They were instantly able to think, speak and behave like their Creator.

Adam spoke to God immediately. We know this because when God created the animals on day six, He brought them to Adam “to see what he would call them” (Gen. 2:19). Naming animals implies creative thinking, also scientific classification, and memory. It is one thing to invent a few thousand names, it another thing to remember all those names. Yet Adam, and presumably Eve, were able to establish their own order on Nature.

That God can impart knowledge without the need for someone to learn it is also clear from the case of Solomon, who was given wisdom. “And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.” 1 Kings 4:29. When the queen of Sheba tested his knowledge, we are told : “Solomon told her all her questions: there was not any thing hid from the king, which he told her not.” 1 Kings 10:3

Working from this revealed truth, we may conjecture that Adam and Eve were brilliant intellectuals. All the sciences were open to them. Either by examination or thought processes they were able to understand a vast amount of what we call science.

When they sinned they fell, spiritually, morally and intellectually, but a huge amount of this original store of understanding remained with them. They lived for centuries after that, which enabled them to teach new generations. This implies that the pre-Flood civilisation was highly-advanced – perhaps more advanced than any civilization after the Flood up to today.

There is an intriguing thought, found in Ecclesiastes, that “The thing that has been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it has been already of old time, which was before us.

There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.” Ecclesiastes 1:9,10,11

When Adam and Eve were driven from the Garden, or orchard, God posted a guard. “So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.” Genesis 3:24

We are not told why the Garden had only one entrance, nor what cherubim are, or what the flaming sword looked like, but the memory of that method of eviction must have been unforgettable for those who saw it. Obviously anyone who tried to enter the Garden again would be killed – something which relates to the death of the Saviour for all of Adam’s offspring in approx. 30 AD.

What did the Earth look like at that time?

One view is that the land was clumped together into a single vast continent. “And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together to one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.” Genesis 1:9

There is no clue given as to the shape or size of this single land mass. It could have been 90% of the surface, or 50%. It could have been entirely low-lying hills and gently rolling countryside, or something quite radical, like a southern hemisphere only comprising land and a northern hemisphere of water.

Before Adam and Eve sinned many of today’s laws of physics did not operate the way they do now. We can only guess at the pre-sin conditions.

Miracles give us a hint as to how life on Earth may have been before sin. In all miracles God intervenes and reverses or cancels ‘natural’ laws. As C.S.Lewis said of the resurrection “Death working backwards” – quite the opposite direction to the direction which all processes in living things move today.

Two notable miracles : the Israelites wore clothes and shoes for 40 years without wearing them out -  “And I have led you forty years in the wilderness: your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and your shoe is not waxen old upon your foot.”  Deuteronomy 29:5

Regeneration of atrophied or non-existent cells : “Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born to him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?” Genesis 17:17

2. The family line from Adam to Noah.

Adam and Eve had “sons and daughters” (Gen. 5:4). In fact every male named in the family tree is said to have had “sons and daughters”, except Noah, whom are told, had three sons.  The fact that he alone had only 3 sons and no other children, is significant, because it is pointed out several times.

Cain married one of his sisters. At that time there were no laws against incest because the genetically pure, but laws were brought in later by God, because post-Flood life was in the process of disintegration, as it still is today.

The pre-Flood average age, based on the list of names between Adam and Noah is impressive.

Adam 800

Seth 807

Enosh 905

Cainan 910

Mahalaleel 895

Jared 962

Enoch 365 (cut short)

Methuselah 969

Lamech 777

Noah 950. He was 500 before the Flood, and lived 350 years after it.

The average age was 834, but the effect of all this longevity was an overlap of generations. We assume that all these men had children who also lived to similar ages. This would mean that Adam was still alive during the lives of Seth, Enosh, Cainan, Mahalaleel, Jared, Enoch, Methuselah and Lamech. In fact, going on the Biblical ages, When Adam was 950 he could have spoken to Methuselah, who lived right through to the Flood. This means that Methuselah could have met and spoken to Noah, Shem, Ham and Japeth, as well as many of the other people who had met the other men in the list.

The fact that generations lived longer is important. It is also important that many people in those days had the opportunity to learn straight from the very people who had met Adam and Eve. The sons and daughters of this mighty race were intellectually developed, genetically healthy, and they all lived in a world which was conducive to prosperity. The population had every advantage, and, I am sure, burgeoned.

Given that conditions were extremely conducive to population growth in pre-Flood times, we can make some reasonable assumptions.

Man has always been a tool-maker.

He has always sought technologies which will make his life easier.

He tends to build things which reflect his values or needs.

Man tends to turn away from God to religion or other substitutes.

Pre-Flood civilisation was a technologically advanced, highly sophisticated ‘modern’ culture, which increased rapidly in the arts and sciences, astrology and superstition, secularism and anti-God behaviour. It was a civilisation which had everything materially, but which had no love or God or interest in obeying him.

“And as it was in the days of Noe, so shall it be also in the days of the Son of man.

They did eat, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, and the flood came, and destroyed them all.” Luke 17:26,27

Genesis 4 provides further insights into the technologies of pre-Flood times.

Cain “built a city”

Jabal was the “father of such as dwell in tents, and of such as have cattle” – this implies weaving, manufacture of ropes, cords and connecting devices. Animal husbandry, livestock management, breeding programs.

Jubal was “the father of all such as handle the harp and organ (pipes). To make such instruments one needs to understand shaping of objects, vibration distances, tones, composition, perhaps notation. The fashioning of musical instruments implies creative dance and musical events.

Tubal-cain was “an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron”. This implies knowledge of ore-extraction, smelting, refining, the making of alloys.

There is divided thought over the word “brass”.

Unger says the word is likely to be “bronze” – an alloy of copper and tin, while brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. The fact remains however that this metal was produced and used long before the Flood.

“Iron” is undisputed. Unfortunately, iron oxidises rapidly when it is wet, which means that all but the purest iron made by past civilisations has disappeared.

The next very significant point to notice about this pre-Flood civilisation is the fact that one man and three sons were able to build a colossal, ocean-going vessel called an Ark. This alone should make us sit up and think about what those pre-Flood people were capable of.

To build an Ark implies a great knowledge of many things. God gave only the dimensions, but He did not explain to Noah how to build it. He knew that pre-Flood people were already technologically advanced enough to do that part. (In a similar way God told Moses to build a Tabernacle, and Solomon to build a Temple, giving the dimensions only.)

Trees had to be selected, felled, and milled. Wood had to be  measured, shaped, cut, fastened and interlocked. Scaffolding had to be raised. Metal was probably used in many different ways too. We assume that nails were used.

The ability to make fire is also assumed because Noah made a sacrifice after the Flood and offered “burnt offerings” to God (Gen. 8:20)

The point I am making here is that the Flood did not necessarily wipe out the intelligence, memories and abilities of the human race, reducing them to ‘stone age’ subsistence. There was probably a strong continuity through the Flood year, and a re-establishment of similar skills and technology straight after the Flood. Shem Ham and Japeth, and their wives, and Noah, were all part of the pre-Flood generation. We are not told whether any of Noah’s family were godly, though we would like to think they were. (Lot’s wife was given the opportunity to escape the judgement yet she was not godly.) But even if they were godly, there is no law which determines that children of godly parents will be the same as their parents, in fact the fact that God had to destroy Sodom and the other four cities, shows that the descendants of a godly man may quickly become an offensive to God.

3. The global Flood (about 2350 BC)

The evidence for a global Flood is quite easy to find, and there are many books which lay this evidence out clearly. Sedimentary rocks, billions of fossils, vast areas of volcanic material, riverbeds which go down into the sea, oil and coal deposits . . . there is no shortage of evidence.

The question is, however, in what way and to what extent did the pre-Flood geological appearance and the post-Flood geological appearance differ?

If the sea before the Flood was “gathered together into one place” was there a time when the land, which was also gathered together in another place, separated, split into pieces, and moved to its present position – to become the continents we are familiar with today? The Bible does not say this happened, but the seas are not presently gathered together into one place, so something must have happened during or after the Flood.

There is a view (that the land moved), in Genesis 10:25 – “And to Eber were born two sons: the name of one was Peleg; for in his days was the earth divided.” Peleg means ‘division’. Divided means ‘to cleave’. But what the verse probably means is that during Peleg’s lifetime the different nations were separated and began to settle in what they came to regard as their own lands. (Territories) This is the first indication of post-Flood nationalism, a later cause of many political and religious wars.

If the continents moved rapidly, sliding on the softer material under them (magma) they would have generated enormous waves. These tidal mountains of water, perhaps as high as 2 miles, would have crashed over the land, pulverising and destroying virtually everything in their path. Is it likely that God would describe this ‘second Flood’ in one small, and ambiguous verse about one of Shem’s sons?

We are not ruling out the possibility of the continents moving, but perhaps their speed was such that catastrophic waves were avoided?

4. The repopulation of the world in one area from Noah’s descendants.

Following the Flood, the population of the world began again. Noah’s family produced the first generation. Noah live another 350 years. If this was the normal lifespan at this time, many of the children would have seen the children of several more generations before they died. This would have been similar to pre-Flood times, except now the average age limit was dropping fast. Very few people after the Flood made it past 300 years.

Shem’s line :

Shem 500

Arphaxad 403

Salah 403

Eber 430

Peleg 209

Reu 207

Serug 200

Nahor 119

Terah 205

Abraham 175

An average age of 285 as compared to a pre-Flood average of 834 years. Today the average age seems to have levelled out at about 75-80, which shows that the human race is not what it used to be. The deterioration may be due to diet, climate, genes or some other factor, or a combination of factors.

From this time on some historical records are available, be they clay tablets, inscriptions in stone, artefacts, buildings or oral traditions carried by myth and legend.

Giants.

One other important ingredient in the Bible account is the mention that, before the Flood, angels cohabited with humans and produced “giants”. It is not within the scope of this essay to examine whether angels and humans can interbreed, or to look in detail at the matter. The main thing is the Bible says that the offspring of this deliberate angelic interbreeding program were beings called “Nephilim” – men of great power, physically, intellectually and spiritually.   ( There were giants (Nephilim) in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.” Genesis 6:4)

The “and also after that” supplies the basis for the Canaanite opposition to Israel. It also suggests that these “giants” may have been the basis of many of the legends which have been handed down to us, of giants, ogres and other monsters, or gods and goddesses. In the same way, eye-witness accounts of dinosaurs have been passed down in terms of ‘flying serpents’, and ‘dragons’. (For Old testament references to “giants” see Num.13:33, Deut.2:11,20, 3:11,13, Josh.12:4,13:12, 15:8, 17:15, and 18:16. For a New testament reference see Jude 1:6) These giants were also called Anakim, Emim and Zamzummim.

Now if the view that these “giants” were living amongst the human race before and after the Flood is correct, we have to revise our understanding of the history of the early world. Just as we have to include dinosaurs in the Ark, and dinosaurs in the world after the Flood, we also have to include these Nephilim before and after the Flood. They were there in Canaan, waiting for Israel – Gen. 12:6, 13:7. Having failed to destroy Adam and Eve, satan tried to destroy the first settlement of humans. Failing that, he next tried to destroy Abraham, Lot and then Israel. But the giants fell, Goliath being one of them, Og another. Without the inclusion of these giants, there are many puzzling things which have to be explained in other ways.

5. The tower of Babel dispersal of people into separate language groups.

The evolutionary view of the origin of languages is that at some stage millions of years ago animals turned grunts into words, and from these crude sounds all the different languages and dialects in the world have sprung. The evidence does not support this view. What we find in the world are many extremely different language ‘families’, each with its own set of grammatical rules, words and meanings, but with very little in common  between each ‘family’ of language.  This is exactly what we would expect to find if the original language ‘families’ were created as separate and distinct entities.

Genesis 10:32 seems to indicate that the dispersion of people across the earth was generally along extended family lines. Since very little time had elapsed since the Flood there would not have been many clans, so there would not be a need for a huge number of new languages – perhaps only a few dozen.

As each language group spread over the planet, generation by generation, they became isolated from each other. Each separate language group developed its own culture, and civilisation, with a slow change in the language – as happens today. Different dialects developed and new words were added all the time.

6. Somewhere during the post-flood time an Ice Age occurred which lasted about 500 years.

Creationist literature usually insists that there is evidence for only one ice age, and that it was of short duration. Its likely cause was a combination of several factors:

1. During the Flood a large amount of water came up from underground. This would have heated the oceans and increased the evaporation rate, which would have led to more snow and the rapid build up of ice.

2. There was also volcanic activity, which would have added to the heating of the oceans, and a large amount of atmospheric dust. The dust would have reflected sunlight and added to the cooling of the planet’s atmosphere.

Before the Flood it seems (?) That there was a canopy of water surrounding the planet, (Gen. 1:6-8) which would have distributed heat reasonably well to all parts. After the Flood this canopy seems to have collapsed, leading to rapid freezing of north and south poles.

Based on this theory, we may have a scenario in which Noah’s descendants live through a cold period, with slowly retreating oceans as the water is lifted from the oceans and converted into vast ice sheets. This would have exposed land-bridges between land-masses, helping humans and animals migrate to distant parts of the world. (It is interesting to note that almost every land area in the world is connected to the Middle East along corridors of land)

At the end of the Ice Age, a great deal of water would have run off the land north and south, forming huge lakes and causing flooding as ice dams broke. There is a lot of evidence to support this.

That the oceans have been higher and lower than they are at present is supported by a lot of evidence. There are many cases of the ruins of human buildings and roads which are now found under sea water. The edges of continents and inland lakes bear the marks of different water-levels – ‘steps’- horizontal planes. There is a lot of evidence to show that huge areas of what is now desert used to be lakes and rivers, such as inland Australia. The Great Lakes of America show signs of having once been part of a single super-lake, and limestone in Egypt shows signs of erosion by extended periods of rain.

7. Nations grew and developed from then on, in their separate lands, sometimes thriving, sometimes decaying and disappearing.

The Readers Digest ‘The World’s Last Mysteries’ lists many civilisations which have come and gone, or risen and dwindled away. Chapter headings include ‘Strange stones of western Europe’, ‘Soul-statues of Corsica’, ‘The secrets of Stonehenge’, ‘The giants of Easter Island’, ‘Teotihuacan . . .’ ‘The lost empire of the Indus Valley’, ‘The silent stones of Tiahuanaco’, ‘The last refuge of the Incas’, ‘Pyramids in the Americas’, ‘When the Sahara was green’, ‘Splendour in the jungle at Angkor’, ‘The Olmecs . . .’, ‘The magnificent realm of the Mayas’, ‘Enigmatic messages of the Nazcas” and so on. At the back of the book are many mysterious finds, dating back to some time when humans built cities and then abandoned them. For example “It is now clear that Bahrain was the centre of a vanished empire . . .” And “ . . .in this inhospitable region at the mouth of the Amazon there are traces of a developed civilisation of Andean character . . .”, and ‘The culture of the Eskimos who now inhabit the region (Ungava Bay) appears to have nothing in common with the people who raised these stones . . .” and “It is now more than a hundred years since a priest, walking in a remote part of Hierro Island, discovered signs of writing engraved on the side of a cliff . . .” There are dozens of similar examples of the remains of human activity, found in odd places and remote parts of the planet – all evidence that humans migrated and settled everywhere after the dispersal from Babel.

8. About the year 1000 AD world population began to burgeon.

Given the right conditions – food, fertile soil, abundance of food, peace, etc, a human population can grow quickly.

Quoting from ‘In the Minds of Men’ by Ian Taylor:

“If humanity is really 3,5 million years old . . . then today’s world population can be predicted  . . . . for example, with a modest estimate of 2.2 children per average family, and an equally modest average generation life span of twenty years, and parents never living long enough to see their grandchildren, then the world population would have grown from a single family to 10 to the power of 2070 people alive at the end of the first million years  . .”

But demographers will say that, for millions of years the human population remains static. For example, when the bones of an Australian were found in Australia in 2001, and dated at 60,000 years, the explanation for why there were no remains of 60,000 years of human activity was : “ . . .how many indigenous people have ever lived in Australia.(?) It is a very large number. The statement on the 2% projection is obviously true using a compound interest formula. However, world population has never grown at anything like 2% per annum until very recently.”

In other words, even though a logical calculation shows that world population could not possibly be as low as it is today, given that humans have been living on this planet for so long, there must have been zero population growth for 3 million years. This, of course, is absurd. However, if we accept the Bible chronology, starting about 4,500 years ago with a family of eight, and given good conditions, we come to approximately the population we have today.

Some theories about early civilisations.

It has long puzzled many people as to how supposedly ‘primitive’ societies could build and invent with such vigour. The evidence is coming forward all the time that the further back we go, the more sophisticated the people were. Huge buildings, massive blocks of stone carved and drilled with apparent ease, ornate jewellery, machinery, metalworking, calendars, weapons, inventions of many kinds, art, music and astronomy. The list is almost endless.

Some explanations for this include :

1. Aliens from another planet came and ‘seeded’ the earth with humans.

2. Aliens tampered with primate DNA to produce humans.

3. Life came from somewhere in space, landed on earth, and from it all life evolved, with humans eventually emerging as a variety of ape with more intelligence.

4. Life evolved over millions of years, producing humans, who lived for millions of years before suddenly exploding into progress, science and so on.

However, none of these explanations stands up to scrutiny. The best explanation is the one the Bible gives :

God created humans and gave them dominion over Nature. The humans disobeyed God and lost their dominion. The humans reproduced and their offspring became a highly developed civilisation (with some crossbreeding with angels). God destroyed this primary colony, but the knowledge and skills were carried through by the survivors, giving them a head start in their own individual colonies around the world. But as generations came and went, the initial high beginnings gradually decayed and successive generations began to remember their ‘golden beginnings’ in terms of myths and stories, which they passed on to their children.

The evidence for this scenario is seen in the amazing buildings and technology which archaeologists are constantly finding in such places as Egypt, and South America (to name but two places out of many). Why did these early civilisations die out? I would hazard a guess – they were wicked. In every case we find signs of idolatry, superstition, astrology, human sacrifice, and other grotesque and horrible activities. As I see it, God’s tolerance has its limits, and no civilisation, no matter how sophisticated, can remain indefinitely before God moves in to punish it.

Where does Crustal Displacement fit into this?

Crustal displacement could have occurred during the Flood. It seems likely that the land masses were once joined into a single area, which later shifted and split apart. If this is the case, then the first crustal displacement took place during the Flood.

After the Flood, the land was quickly repopulated by plants and animals. Life developed on the fertile layer on top of the sedimentary rock laid down by the Flood – life lived on the surface of the world-wide ‘cemetery’ comprising past generations of plants, animals and humans. Scientists have discovered many types of bacteria living in the rock too – which could have got there as it was being laid down.

Post-Flood populations were not primitive. They began as highly intelligent, highly skilled groups, and then gradually degenerated, as knowledge they had brought with them from before the Flood was lost. Science was replaced by superstition and each civilisation crumbled and collapsed – leaving the enigmatic ruins for archaeologists to dig through today.

The continent of Antarctica, probably temperate and inhabited after the Flood seems to have undergone sudden and dramatic temperature changes. The remains of plants and animals have been found which do now grow there now. Maps have also been found (passed down and copied from copies) of the coastline of Antarctica, which look as if they were drawn at a time when there was no ice in the land. The maps are accurate compared to today’s satellite images, and drawn to an exact projection, allowing for the curvature of the earth.

Who drew these maps, and how did the map-makers know how to draw them, and how to navigate so well? It seems most likely that the cartographers were post-Flood humans. We already know that they were intelligent, technological, and scientific. Other groups of post-Flood humans settled in other parts of the world, doing equally sophisticated things. There is no need to postulate tens of thousands of years, or ancient civilisations. Compare the rate at which humans have developed between the 1800’s and the 1900’s. We have gone from horse and cart to atomic bomb in less than a single generation.

The Bible chronology allows very little time between the end of the Flood and the onset Ice Age for ‘snap-freezing’ a continent. If, on the other hand, the ‘snap-freezing’ took place after the Ice Age, we come to about 4000 years ago, or 2000 BC, which is within historical records.

There are two ways (as far as I can see) by which Antarctica could be ‘snap-frozen’.

1. Move the entire continent. But if this happened, the enormous waves generated would sweep around the world like a second Flood – a thing which God promised never to send again.

If this happened, there would probably be a domino effect, with other land-masses moving, and huge volcanic eruptions, leading to a frozen world, and the extinction of most of the life.

2. Shift the polar axis.

As to (1) the Bible tells us several things about the stability of the land-masses:

“While the earth remains, seed time and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22

“And I will establish my covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut off any more by the waters of a flood; neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.” Genesis 9:11

“Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.”             1 Chronicles 16:30

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? declare, if you have understanding.

Who has laid the measures thereof, if you know? or who has stretched the line upon it?”

Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? or who laid the corner stone thereof” Job 38:4,5,6

“Who laid the foundations of the earth, that it should not be removed for ever.

You covered it with the deep as with a garment: the waters stood above the mountains.

At Thy rebuke they fled; at the voice of Thy thunder they hastened away. They go up by the mountains; they go down by the valleys to the place which you have founded for them.

You have set a bound that they may not pass over; that they turn not again to cover the earth.”  Psalm 104:5-9

Obviously, the Bible makes it clear that the land-masses are stable and secure. There is no chance that they might suddenly go skidding away across the softer magma underneath. God has fastened them, or given them foundations, to prevent this very thing.

However Einstein and others have postulated that the land is not securely fixed :

“Albert Einstein investigated the possibility that the weight of the ice-caps, which are not symmetrically distributed about the pole, might cause (a displacement). Einstein wrote ‘The earth’s rotation acts on these unsymmetrically deposited masses, and produces centrifugal momentum that is transmitted to the rigid crust of the Earth. The constantly increasing centrifugal momentum produced this way will, when it reaches a certain point, produce a movement of the Earth’s crust over the Earth’s body, and this will displace the polar regions towards the equator’” (‘Fingerprints of the gods’ page 495)

2. Polar shift.

The post-Flood planet was very different to the pre-Flood planet. For one thing, the climate was different. Before the Flood there was no rain. All life apparently grew larger and lived longer. There is much fossil evidence of giant creatures which are related to their present-day diminutive relatives. Genetically humans were superior, being so close to their original perfect parents. The age-limits of pre-Flood humans reflects this. And there were giants, or hybrid humans, who probably possessed supernatural abilities, perhaps high IQ’s and probably great physical strength, which might explain why so many early buildings are so large.

For example, Og of Bashan – “For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.” Deuteronomy 3:11. Bullinger puts a cubit at between 21 and 25 inches. Nine cubits = 189-225 inches, or  15 plus feet to 18 plus feet long by 7 to 8 feet wide.

Bullinger also notes that the dimensions of Og’s bedstead (or couch) are exactly the same as the measurement of Marduk in Babylon.

The geography was different. Mountains were pushed up rapidly. There is strong evidence that this is so. One evidence is the fact that where there is folding of strata, the folds re not cracked and shattered, as you might expect if the layers were bent while dry and hard. The fact that cracking is not seen indicates that the folding took place rapidly while the layers were still malleable. It also indicates that the layers were produced rapidly, and not over millions of years.

The language was different. Before the Flood all the people shared a common language, but soon after the Flood the Lord divided the people into language groups and sent them across the world to settle in different lands.

The theories which Graham Hancock puts forward in his book ‘Fingerprints of the gods’ are based on several assumptions :

1. Man is an evolved ape,

2. The Earth is millions of years old,

3. About 10,000 years ago a civilisation flourished in temperate Antarctica’s continent

4. That civilisation tried to share its technology and science with other civilisations

5. At some point in ancient history a near-global flood occurred, from which only a few humans survived, along with some animals and birds

6. Crustal displacement destroyed that flourishing civilisation, and sweeping the world with chaos and destruction

7. Many of the earliest monuments are remnants of this former civilisation.

8. Several Ice Ages followed a crustal displacement which also caused huge floods and volcanic devastation. The history of the world is a succession of disasters, reaching back into the remote past.

Problems with the theory:

1. Man was originally created perfect by God

2. The Earth is not much older than 6000 years

3. A pre-Flood civilisation flourished up to about 4,500 years ago.

4. After the Flood many highly sophisticated civilisations flourished in different parts of the world, all of them sprung from the same place – the mountains of Ararat.  The common thread which runs through many early civilisations is their common origin and sharing of common knowledge and beliefs

God has fixed the continents firmly to stop them from moving

5. A global Flood occurred, from which only 8 humans survived, along with some animals and birds

6. God has promised never to destroy the world again with water, however, a shift in the polar axis appears to have ‘snap-frozen’ Antarctica. This may have happened very soon after the Flood, and at the onset of the Ice Age.

7. Early monuments could have been built by post-Flood civilisations within the time-frame of Biblical chronology

8. The Bible doesn’t even mention any Ice Age, but there is evidence that ice sheets did, at one time, cover a huge area of the planet. However, the ice has retreated, and where it used to be, cities and people are now flourishing. The Bible does not allow for any ‘remote past’ for civilisation. All that has happened has happened within the last 4 and half thousand years.

Conclusion

There are many theories about the history of Man, and the sequence of events since he first began to leave his mark on the planet is difficult to unravel. Even the Bible leaves many areas undescribed. The only two things we have to go on are the Bible chronology and the evidence. If the two match, then we have a correct view. We know that the Bible is always accurate, so any findings we uncover must be placed within the Bible framework.

As a lay person, I am very aware of my almost complete lack of understanding on secular archaeology, history and so on, but I have the Bible. Through the years I have  found that it has always proved itself right on any matter on which it speaks, and I expect it will continue to do so.

Just because Graham Hancock’s book raises many questions as to the antiquity of Man, and poses many unanswerable questions, does not in itself prove the Bible incorrect. Over the last 2000 years many people have raised similar questions and produced many equally interesting theories, but all of them have fallen into line under the power of the accurate word of God. I have no doubt that Mr. Hancock’s theory, of a highly sophisticated race, who originated from Antarctica’s once temperate continent, who then built sophisticated monuments, navigated the world using accurate latitude and longitude, who mapped lands now buried under ice, who seemed to indicate that they were at least 10,000 years old, who worked stone as if it was soft clay or putty, who understood the precession of the constellations to an incredibly fine degree, who apparently mapped the world and represented highly significant mathematical principles in the dimensions of the oldest pyramids, whose homeland skidded south and stopped at the pole . . . has many features which need to be evaluated. But most of his conclusions do not fit with Bible chronology.

If anything, much of the evidence (apart from his theories) confirms the Bible, because it has been saying, since it was written, that Man began perfect and then fell. It has been saying that “there is nothing new under the sun” for thousands of years. It describes technology before the Flood, and explains the extent of the Flood, and the aftermath. It gives the origin of nations, and languages, the reason why the people migrated, and it hints at their high degree of inventiveness and ability. It also relates the influence of hybrids – the giants. All these things can explain the theories put forward by Mr. Hancock, without damaging the Bible chronology.

Many mysteries remain.

Alien Empire – a letter to the author

Dear Mr. O’Toole,
I recently purchased ‘Alien Empire’ and was very impressed by the interesting information and beautiful photographs in the book. As a keen collector of research material, your book will have its place on the shelf.
However, I had a problem with something I read on page 34, 35 and 38, about the peppered moth. I have come across this example of natural selection before, in school text books and at least two encyclopedias, but the conclusions which all these articles, and your article, reach have never satisfied me.
As you correctly pointed out, the blackening of the trees should have given the darker moth an advantage over the lighter moth. I have read about H.B.Kettlewell, who performed most of the original studies on the moth. He said, if Darwin had seen the results of his work “He would have witnessed the consummation and confirmation of his life’s work” (Kettlewell 1959, Scientific America, 1978 page 3)
But surely, all Kettlewell proved was that gene frequencies have shifted back and forth? The same moth, which can express a gene which gives it a light colour or a dark colour, is still the same moth, with the same genes? If a new gene had been produced, due to the arrival of industrial soot on the trees, we would have a clear example of evolution, but as far as we know, the moth has no new genes, so no evolution has occurred.
I have also read something written by L.Harrison Matthews, a biologist who wrote the foreword for the 1971 edition of Darwin’s ‘Origin of the Species’. He said, on the subject of the peppered moth, that it showed natural selection but not “evolution in action”.
Also, British scientist Cyril Clarke has investigated the peppered moth for 25 years. He said he saw only 2 moths in their natural habitat by day. He says that Kettlewell and others attracted the moths into traps in the forest by night, using a light, or released female pheromones. In each case the moths were seen only at night. (C.A.Clarke ‘Evolution in reverse : clean air and the peppered moth’ Biological Journal of the Linnaean Society 26:189-199. 1985)
The moths being filmed eaten by the birds were laboratory-bred ones placed onto the tree trunks by Kettlewell. They were so languid they had to be warmed up – on the car bonnet – before they were stuck to the trees. Dead moths stuck to tree trunks hardly proves that moths settle by day on tree trunks.
Theodore Sargent – University of Massachusetts biologist – helped glue the moths. He has now admitted that textbooks and films have featured “a lot of fraudulent photographs” (J.A.Coyne ‘Nature’ 396 (6706):35-36 and The Washington Times Jan.17th 1999 page D8)
But there is another aspect to what you wrote in ‘Alien Empire’ which I have a problem with – about Gregor Mendel. You seem to think that the peppered moth “demonstrates the inheritance of discrete factors or genes” in the sense that genes may become mixed, producing new combinations which will then be passed on to future generations. This is not what Mendel discovered.
What Mendel proved, years before Darwin published, was that genes are never blended. Traits in parents are inherited by the offspring, make a temporary association only in the offspring, and in subsequent generations the genetic material separates into the distinct units that were present in the original parents.
Darwin believed in blending inheritance, but Mendel had already proved that this did not happen. When Mendel’s work was rediscovered in the early 1900s the initial reaction was against Darwin.
Mendel’s studies clearly established the stability of plants and animals. He also showed that traits which were not present in the parents but which appeared in the offspring were not ‘new’ at all, but had been present in the parent’s ancestors. The information to produce the trait was present in the genetic material all along, but it was hidden because of the dominance of another trait. Mendel’s work showed that natural selection alone cannot bring about a new trait, let alone a new species.
You say that “The process of natural selection has now been amply demonstrated by observation and experiment . . .” To a certain extent this is true. Natural selection is a powerful mechanism, which sorts out the strongest from the weakest, and the best-adapted from the less adapted. Natural selection helps organisms to survive in a changing environment. But if you think natural selection is a mechanism whereby evolution occurs, the evidence is lacking. All natural selection does is ‘shuffle’ pre-existing genes. It never produces new information, or new genetic material.
A second theory has been proposed, that mutations provide the new material, but in every observed case, mutations have been either lethal, or they have worked against the best interests of the organism – unless it has been placed in an abnormal environment to protect it. Mutations usually amount to removal of or confusion of information, so they have never been shown to be a viable mechanism behind evolution.
I think it is a terrible shame that millions of people believe in natural selection as a cause for evolution when this has never been demonstrated. So many people have been indoctrinated with so-called ‘proofs’, which are in fact fraudulent (as in the case of Kettlewell and others), or a mixture of half-truths and philosophy. The lack of real, solid evidence is a shameful aspect of the noble pursuit which we call Science.
I am open-minded enough to recognize genuine proof of evolution when I see it, yet, over the last 30 years, I have never seen any proof. Every so-called proof is lacking. Natural selection (or survival of the fittest) produces no new genetic information. All it does is modify already existing information. No new DNA appears. Animals may seem to show evolution, but all they are doing is expressing genes which were not, until that moment, dominant. Suppressed genes are not evidence of evolution because they are already there.
Thanks to the variety of genes already available within an organism, there is room to adapt, to change, to modify, but never beyond the strict limit imposed on the organism by the genes. It is a case of “This far but no further.”
One illustration of this might be the spectrum of visible light. There are seven colours in a rainbow, and all the colours we see are different combinations of these seven. No new colours are ever produced, because the primary limit is always seven.
It is a truly remarkable thing how Science constantly affirms the truth, yet scientists constantly deny it.
Yours sincerely,
Richard Gunther

Archaeopteryx

There are many people who believe quite sincerely that the fossil remains of archaeopteryx represent a missing link between dinosaurs and birds, I think this fanciful common assumption ought to be weighed against the hard evidence before such a conclusion is reached.

In 1984, Germany, at the International Archaeopteryx Conference about the only thing all the scientists generally agreed on was that the fossil represented a true bird. The members who attended disagreed on just about everything else. A tiny minority at the conference thought that the fossil represented a dinosaur one of the smallest, a coelurosaurian, which means small and light-framed. But a bird? Yes, definitely a bird.

The fact that the archaeopteryx shares some things with other vertebrates is not unique. Most reptiles, birds and mammals share some features, but this does not mean that they evolved from each other. Most creatures have legs or limb bones, most can see, hear, breath and smell, but the fact that there are similarities does not prove a common origin.

In the same way we would not think that a motorbike, a car and a jet boat all come from the same original machine, though they all share some things in common. It is faulty reasoning to jump from seeing similarities to the conclusion that similarities prove a common origin.

Archaeopteryx had teeth, there is no doubt about that, but does this mean that it was once a dinosaur and it has retained the teeth in its evolution? Once again, faulty reasoning is operating here. If we first of all assume the direction of evolution, without a shred of proof, and then we add another assumption to our first assumption, all we have is two assumptions. Neither assumption proves the other, so nothing has been accomplished. The presence of teeth does not prove a common origin, or even a link with another creature.

Other fossil birds have been found with teeth too. Most other birds don’t have teeth. Some reptiles don’t have teeth, some do. Some mammals have teeth, some don’t. What does the presence or absence of teeth prove? All it proves is that some birds have teeth and some don’t.

Archaeopteryx had feathers. Feathers are not hairs or scales. Feathers are incredibly complex 3-dimensional structures. They have tapered shafts, barbules, hooks and shafts. They have precise curvatures, and a perfect balance between materials and function.

Feathers appear on archaeopteryx already formed and complete. There are no fossil archaeopteryx with half-formed feathers, or partially formed wings. All we have is a bird with feathers and no transitional forms to prove that the archaeopteryx has evolved from some other animal.

Furthermore, the difference between the three complex forms feathers, scales and hairs – is vast when it is expressed it in terms of DNA information. In order to change from dinosaur scales to bird feathers huge stretches of complete, useful DNA information have to appear out of nowhere. This has never been seen in any experiment and there is no mechanism known to science whereby new DNA can appear.

Some people think that mutations, tiny and accumulative, have added up to produce wings with feathers, but mutations have often been seen to be harmful, or disruptive of DNA, and sometimes lethal. Mutations may accumulate but they never produce masses of useful new information. It is only an assumption that, some time in a distant past, mutations have worked in the opposite direction to that which they work today, to produce millions of wonderful new limbs and senses, organs and external features.

There is no hard evidence to prove that archaeopteryx is a transitional form, nor is there any evidence to show how flight evolved, how limbs turned into wings, how bones became hollow for flight, or how skulls became beaks. People who think the archaeopteryx is a missing link assume too much.

Another problem which evolutionists have in the case of birds evolving is the rule, which evolutionists usually hold: evolution follows the path of greater efficiency. In other words, if a change occurs in a living creature, it is usually towards making that creature better able to survive. This means that a creature may become more agile, faster, better camouflaged, stronger, tougher, more productive and so on. But logically, if a dinosaur were to evolve into a bird, it would need to grow useless limbs intended for flight which would be a great hindrance to it for thousands or millions of years, until finally the dinosaurs whole body was adapted for flight. This would mean that, while the wings were forming, and the feathers growing, the bones would be thinning and hollowing out, the lungs would be extending into its bones, its legs would be changing into claws, its whole body preparing for egg-laying, nesting and feeding chicks, its mouth disappearing and a light beak growing, and a thousand other major changes. For most of this time the changes would be a hindrance to the creature, which contradicts the rule held by many evolutionists.

How can survival of the fittest work if a half-dinosaur is trying to move about with two useless limbs? How can natural selection sort out the less viable from the mutations which-may-be-beneficial in the long run? Once again the theory that dinosaurs changed into birds falls into a tangle of unprovable assumptions.

But what may be the most damaging fact of all is the genetics side of archaeopteryx. Gregor Mendel proved, (and he has been vindicated many times), that inherited characteristics never blend. In other words, if a certain gene expresses in one generation, it may submerge for a while, but it can always return. It doesn’t disappear, and it doesn’t blend with other genes.

This means that the genes for feathers, bones, muscles, colours, beaks, eyes, legs and so on are always present in the fertilised egg. This provides the possibility for many varieties within a species, but never more than the genes will allow. This is why we have big horses and little horses, black dogs and white dogs, long-haired cats and short-haired cats, but in all this variety there is never any more than the genes will allow. No new genes ever appear, and no large chunks of new useful information ever appear.

In other words, thanks to discoveries in modern genetics, it is now known that species are separated and preserved by their genes. Horses will always be horses, dogs dogs and cats cats. Pigeons may come in all shapes and sizes, but they will always be pigeons. There are no exceptions. And the only way anything really new can appear in a creature is by placing a new, complete packet of information into the DNA and this is something which has never been seen to happen. It is the same for any human invention: in order for a car to fly a mass of new, complete information has to be produced, and then applied as real parts, and integrated with the car, which would also need to be modified to accommodate the new parts, but there is no known mechanism whereby a dinosaur can receive a huge amount of useful information into its DNA to change it into a bird.

So the archaeopteryx appears to be a bird with teeth proof that there were once birds with teeth living some time in the past. That is all it proves.

But there is something else that ought to be said about this fossil, and that is the manner in which it was fossilised. In order to turn a living creature into a fossil, one needs to kill and preserve it fairly quickly, because decomposition usually sets in soon after death and the remains disappear. Even a large creature like a cow will only last a year or so if it dies on a hillside. Weather and bacteria are very efficient at dismantling even the largest piece of carcass.

The fact that the fossil archaeopteryx has been found in sedimentary rock indicates that it was drowned and buried rapidly before it could escape. Sedimentary rock is made out of once fluid gravel, mud, sand and other sediments, which subsequently settled and hardened. This fact indicates a sudden, disastrous flood, which engulfed the birds along with many other living things, before they could flee the water and alluvium.

This, of course, supports the Biblical account of the world-wide flood. Archaeopteryx therefore best illustrates creation (since there is no evidence to support transitional forms) and the flood (because of the huge amount of fossil-bearing sedimentary rocks around the world).
